Trinder tops Bellevue Production Challenge Road Race By J ane Steele KENT , WA, J U LY 17 Craig Tri nder won th e Bellevue Suzuki 750 P roductio n Challenge, but not without a fight from Joe Pitt m an, at Seattle Internatio na l Raceway. The race was sponsored by Bellevue Suzuki, a long tim e sup porter of The Washington Motorcycle Roadracing Associa tio n. Bell evu e Suzuki was one of a handfu l of dea lers to offer WMRRA financial s up po rt as th e fle dgling cl u b struggled to ge t o n its feet three years ago. Besides th e fin ancial sup po rt of th e loca l deal er , Su zuki was offeri ng co nti ngency money as part of th eir GSXR Series, and o ther classes were runnin g for Yam aha co ntingency money. The m orning heat race, run for gri d posi tio n onl y, was marred bv a se r io u s cras h w h en Suzuk i'mounted J o hn Duga n ra n off th e track in the tigh t hairpin sectio n and su ffered a back inj ury. After th e track was cleared and racing was able to resume, time cons tra in ts did not a llo w a restart. Trinder a tt em p ted to draft Pittman on the stra igh taway every lap, but each tim e he didn't build up eno u g h ' sp eed . a n d Pittman would be in th e lead goi ng into the first turn. But , o n th e eigh th lap of the 10-la p race, Trinder tried passing on the inside of tum o ne, and too k Pittman by surprise. Tum o ne at SIR is a top speed turn; th e bikes don't slo w even though they have jus t come off 'rh e long stra igh t. But T ri nder had p icked up too much speed to ma ke th e left-h and sweeper that follows turn one, and got o u t of shape. allow ing Pit tman to sli p by. Pittman did not hold on to hi s lead for long, as Trinder drafted past again on the last .la p and held off his opponent to tak e th e checkered flag. Pittma n was ridin g with a badly-injured hand from a highspeed cra sh at sou thern Cal ifornia 's Willow Springs two weeks ago. Mike Sullivan held onto the th ird posi tion, riding by himself for the entire race. Micha el McBrady challenged Oregon.rider Sha wn Roberti for fourth p lace, but when the flag drop ped, R oberti prevailed. Bellevue Suzu ki's own Robert Cam pb ell too k . si x th p la ce.
