Sm ith LAW RENCEBU RG, IN, J U L Y 8 J effrey Chis ham survived tensi ve moments during the Open B final at the Lawren ceburg Sh ort T rac k to eme rge vi ct oriou s o ver W illiam Montgom ery a nd Mik e Daniels. Th in gs got cra zy as soon as the race started with Chish am biting the d irt in the first turn, forcing a restart. On the restart, however, ma yh em broke loose wh en H ersch el Benkert's thro ttle stuc k while the pack charged into th e first turn and took ou t every ri der in the race. Most of th e rid ers managed to mak e it back to th e sta rti ng line for a second restart, bu t tra ck promoter H erschel Benker t was taken to the hospi tal with a broken leg and shoul der. The race was pu t on ice until th e survivors could assess their damages. Whe n raci ng go t back underwa y, Chisham mo tored home wi th the win, just a hea d of Montgom ery. T he 80cc class turned into a match race be tween two La wr en ceburg riders - Ma tt Auxier and Brian Knippernberg. Knippenberg took the ear ly lead but had Auxier kn ip' ping a t his heels every in ch of the way. T he dice raged for the whol e race with Knippernber g inchi ng a hea d for the wi n. By th e tim e the Open A class lin ed up for th e start of the race , th e lap s were cut down to just four to abide by the local cur few. Grad y Philli ps grabbed th e hol esh ot comi ng ou t th e o ther side of turn number two, out front to lead th e way for th e win. Pa trick Behrle took th e number two spot wi th Dave Li psco mb finish ing third. T he resu lts of th e race were prot ested as a n eagle eye in th e pi ts spotted o ne rider cha ngi ng machines after th e hea ts, a nd af ter th at situation was resol ved , it didn 't effect any of the first three pl ace finishers. Frampton flies at Pillsbury Mills MX By Irwin Roth OGD EN , UT, J ULY 18-19 Brad Frampton was th e big winner at this week's USRA race at th e P ill sb ury Mills track. Fra mpton used a pair of Yamahas to decima te bo th th e l25cc and 250cc Expert ra nks every time he hi t th e track. Brad Bo lton and Scott Nielson (who rode three Expert classes each da y) were hot on h is heels each time out. In Saturday's 250cc Expert class , Frampton tim ed th e fla g sta rt pe rfectly and led into th e first turn' fo llowed by Niel son a nd Corky Ma ug hn. Ma tt J enkins a nd Bolton held up the top five. With in a lap , J enkin s disp laced Maugh n whi le the battIe for the lead put so me di stance o n the pack. Bo lton was th e o nly o ne in the top five to mak e a move aft er the halfway point of th is seven- la p race. H e di splaced Maughn on th e fifth lap a nd held o n until th e checke rs. Niel son never found a way a ro und . long-time rival Frampton a nd J enki ns held on for the third spo t. Nielson was down in sevent h. Bolton quickl y passed Maughn a nd set his sights on Fram p ton before he could ge t too much of a lead. Brian Levitt worked hi s way up from a n eigh th place start to land himself in fourth before the co mp letio n of th e second go-ro u nd, J enkins was righ t on hi s tail, followed by Nielson. The dynamic duo of Nielson a nd J enkins sto rm ed past Levitt in that o rder to cl aim founh and fifth positions. As th e leaders battled o n, Neil son fou ght his way up to third o n th e white-flag la p , di splacing a fading Walker. J enkins moved Walker back o ne more position a nd clai med fourth.
