Eng la nd's dr eam to win tod ay, was sha ttered after only two races, as Denmark raced into a n eigh t point lead aft er winning th e first races by 5-1 max results. Predi ctabl y the World Champion, Hans Nielsen, top scor ed with 13 points for Denmark, and for England, Kelvin Tatum was their hero with 14 points, wi th support only by Simon Cross, who chi p ped in with 10 points. It was .never a case of wh o would win but hope of by how many points Denmark cou ld get over En gland. The clash between the top two, Nielsen and Ta tu m, proved to be a classic wit h th e Englsihrna n holding a slender lead right up until th e checkered flag, whe n th e Dan e d ived o n th e insi de to win by mere in ches. Ta tum had hi s revenge in th e nomina ted rider s race when he held off th e cha mpio n 's challenge. The closes t tha t England came to the Dan es was after a 4-2 race win by Cross' and Knight in heat 10 to p ut them wi thi n reac h, j us t si x poi nts do wn . Bu t the Nor sem en ca me back in the nex t race with a 5-1 max win thanks to Nielsen a nd. G undersen over Tatum. Pierce 's Yamah as was th e com bination to beat in th e 250c class a t th e second round of th e BloomingtonNormal M.C. 's 1988Scrambles Seri es held at their Wapella clubgrounds. All en lock ed horns with Chad Barth in the l25c c class a nd th e pair fought a race-long du el with Allen leading most every in ch but th e last, giving the win to Barth in th e final few feet. That loss seemed to just fuel his determination for when the 250s filed under the ch eckers it was Allen taking the hard-fought win over Dan Carter and Shawn Wad e. The 50cc fin al belonged to Shane Garrison, wh o had finished third in the heat behind Shannon Wright and Randy Smith. Desp ite a slow start in th e main, Garrison rolled to th e lead on the third lap a nd was never headed. Wri ght, the hea t win ne r, succeeded in holding off mith and Mike Oehl er for the second spo t. The Mini race belonged to Dana Curti n. Chris McNu tt go t the hol esho t bu t ga ve up the lead to Curtin in th e first turn and Curt in nailed do wn the ru na wav wi n fro m there. In th e 200cc cla~s G reg Vogel went ou t and fought off Greg Pickens for the win . teve Med iero tto a nd hi s Husky diced w it h the Ho nda o f Gar y Brennan in the early laps of th e 400cc class but when the checkers flew Meierotto had built up a go od lead to ta ke the win. Brenn an d id fight off th e lat e cha rges of Wad e a nd Mark Augenstein for the second spo t. Brennan ma de his presence felt in a big wa y in the Senior fina l whe n he blasted into the lead in fro nt of Ya ma ha pilot Les Esli nger and Honda-mounted Ra y Smith. T he order was set in the first turn as Brennan held back a ll a ttem p ts by Eslinger to get by. Rick Knuth a nd his Ge ne Knuth/ J oe Evan s/DC Cycle Rot ax mad e short work of th e 500cc fina l. Knuth wasted no time in grabb ing th e lead in the fir st turn and from there pulled a way from Jimmy Hisle a nd Terry Ada ms for the runaway win.
