"1 go t a great start and the bike was under control," R o p er said about his 1971, ex-Dick Mann BSA A75R . "It jumps around a bit, but this thing handles beautifully." By the last lap, Roper had opened a 4.7-second gap on Johnson and safely finished first. J oh nson , settling for second, said he would I normally run closer with Roper, but there had not been enough time to adjust the valve clearances on th e Triumph tri ple. The machine's owner and tuner, Eraldo Ferracci, had his hands full working on four other FBF mach ines during the weekend. . Satterlee finished even farther back, in third, nearly 26 seconds behind the leader. It was h is second race aboard a 1972 ex-factory HarleyDavidson XRTI. "It's a ha ndfu l," said Satterlee, who is more accustomed to modernday, four-cylinder production racers. "We 're talking Detroi t iron here. By th e third lap , 1 knew 1 wasn' t able to keep the pace." . In other vin tage racing ac tion, Craig McLean won the 350 Grand Prix class by a h air over Scott Borern. Borem led most of th e way on his 1970 Ducati Desmo, bin McLean got by ' on the next-to-last- lap with careful and smooth ri ding aboard his 1960 Norton Manx. L Mike Green took another 250 Gra nd P ri x win on his 1965 Du ca ti Dia na. G reen said he enjoyed ri di ng on Laguna Seca's new section, but some of the older sectio ns go t the better of his ·bi ke's old twi n-shock sus pension, sen ding h im dancing and skating across the bumps. He said he's lookin g forward to the track being repaved. Green had to dea l with another aspect of track conditions over the weekend. The historic racing series has been critized lately for running machines that leak oil on the track. The AHRMA tries to so lve th e problem at Laguna Seca with spot checks after every practice. Any bike found dripping oil had to go through tech inspection again, said Green, who is the AHRMA's chief tech inspector. And any bike dripping on the pre-grid would not be allowed to race. AHRMA Director Gary Winn said he was concerned that vintage racing may be banned at AMA Nationals. "It's a threat," he said. "We have to say, 'Look, you're jeopardizing this National event." AMA/CCS Chairman R o g er . Edmon dso n, who has said he is against running vintage bikes at Nation al s, said there }Vere no oil problems at Laguna Seca. Winn said that the situation was better than befo re. Nevertheless, he reported d urin g the riders' meeting that three vintage bikes were caught dri pping oil after practice. "We've got a few bozos that -are blowing a bit," Green said. "The biggest p rob lem is the AMA. Some of the newer people in it don't seem to be too keen (about vintage racing). If it weren't for (these vintage bikes), where wou ld we be now?" • Results , .PRE 500 : 1. Pete Johnson (Han); 2. Dave Roper (Mat); 3. Mi ke W ilson (BSA); 4. Craig Mclean (Han); 5.
