LOOKING BACK
America's World Cup Speedway Champion finalists were pictured on the
cover of Cycle News 40 years ago. In Sweden, Team USA finished within
a point of England to get into the final... The 250cc Motocross World
Championship came to Unadilla, where Kent Howerton won both motos,
but it was 19-year-old Belgian Georges Jobe, who went 2-2 on the day,
clinching his first title... Mike Kidd won the Grand National Championship
TT at Ascot... Bill Grossi and David Gerig won titles at the 4-Stroke
Championship MX at Carlsbad.

Tim Hart was pictured on the cover of Cycle News 50 years ago. Hart
competed at Ascot Park on a Thursday night then headed south to Mexico,
where he ran off with the CMC 250 and 500cc Expert-class wins...
Motocross was invited to the Oxnard Sports Festival, a nine-day festival
of sports of all kinds, including tennis, wrestling, car rally, etc. The event
promotor wasn't an expert at running motocross races and didn't impress
the racers or fans, but just having motocross included made it worthwhile.
Jim Wilson was the top rider... Jim Rice won for the fifth time of the year,
this time at the Santa Rosa Mile.
