At the end of 30 laps, four teams re mained on the lead la p with Loc khart leadi ng, T arga second, ~ Hi gh Tech third and Jeff Heino now riding th e Du tchman bike back up to fourth. After running pu t of gas earlier, Hyper-Cycle was now th e team on the move as Andrew sliced th rough - traffic p icking up five po sitions in 10 laps and hold ing 12th at th e end of 50 laps. Finally, the new pads were in , th e bik e refueled, an d Brauneck was off. As Lockhart returned to the fray, t Targa pitted to fue l and change riders. Chivington handed the bi ke to Shoris and on this stop T arga moved in fro nt, "That stop took twice as lo ng as it should have," said Quarterley. " Our terminal speed is about 10 mph faster than Targa , so we' re on the brak es lon ger and using more pad." "T he pins on the pads are su p posed to come out easy; they were ho t and go t ca ugh t and that 's where we lost our time," sai d crewman Stu " Thorne. By now, Targa had a o ne minute and 58 second lead o n Lockhart. Shorts slo wed his lap tim es into th e low 2:30-range as Brauneck turned on th e gas and ra n ' a series ' of 2:26 laps while try ing to catch Shorts. H yper-Cycle co n tin ued to char~e and held eigh th on lap 60. With th e final laps winding down, Kayo cra shed out of the race and GTU lead ers, Roswell Ra cing, blew a motor, giving th e lead back to Lon~evity. With T arga out front, Brauneck clicked off the fastest lap of the day, a 2:25.8, while trying to catch Shorts before Lockhart crew chief Keith Perry gave him th e signal to slow down. " We slowed Doug after that lap; Lockhart Racing (1) leads High Tech Racing (4). High Tech finished second with Lockhart ending up third. Carry Andrew and Kenny Kopecky rode the Hyper Cycle Suzuki to a fifth place finish at Road America. we just didn 't want to take a cha nce o f so methi ng h appening," sa id Perry . With five laps remaining, Brauneck came by the pits pointing to the lower portion of th e bik e. T wo laps later he pitted to have oil wiped off the Iootpegs. By now, the Lo ckhart bike had slowed down to high 2:30 lap times, caused by blowing oil. On th e last lap, High Tech Racing ca u gh t a n d p assed Lockhart for second. At th e checkered flag , it was Targa taking a hard-earned and muchneeded win. " It 's great to win o ner-it feels great. We hung in th ere all day lon g and wrung its neck," echoed a happy Chivington. " It was oiling up the tires and I could n 't ride it," said Brauneck, wh ose leathers were covered with oil. " I co uld barely stay on the bik e." " We used Daytona gearing today. . We used a 36 tooth sprocket and th at worked great ," sai d a jubilant Shorts. T eam Targa is sponso red b y Kawasaki USA, Targa and Castrol. T eam Lockhart now holds th eoverall points lead (59) going into th e next round at Mid-Ohio.
