The factory H o nda rider used consistency as the key to success to capture the overall victory at the 500cc U.S. ' 'II GP at H 0 IIrster H I s, b ut most . Importantly for Geboers he 6 lea ves th e U.S. o ne po int closer to th e series points lead er from Great Britain , Honda teammate Dave Thorpe. " Winn ing here mak es me feel good, but 1 would 've liked to hav e won a heat (mow)," said a rather calm Geboers after th e second moto, " I used cons istenc y today because 1 need th e points. It' s nice to win the GP , but points are wh at's important." Thorpe finished second overall via a 1-5 tall y to Geboers ' 3-2. Thorpe heads back to Europe to contest the next 500cc GP in his home country of England, July 10, with a threepoint advantage over Thorpe, 211208, with five rounds remaining in the seri es. Third in points is Great Britain's Kurt Nicoll, who finished sixth overa ll at H ollister with a 74 tall y. America's hopes of stopping the European a ttack at Holhst~r went down th e tubes two turns mto the first moto wh en the two U.S . favorires to win, Kawasaki 's J eff Ward and Ron Lechien, crashed. Remounting near th e back of the pa ck, both Ward a nd Lechien put in half-hearted attempts at a com e-from-behind ride only to pull out of th e race. Neither rider started the second moto Ward complaining of a sore shoulder and Lechien of a n injured thumb. Riding under th e Australian and American flag was Honda 's Jeff Leisk, an Aussie riding under the Honda U.S.A. banner and residing in America during the raci ng season. Leisk finished six th in the first mo w then came back and surprised everyone with th e second-moto victory. Leisk , who says he plans on campaigning th e 1989 500 cc Worl d Championship Series full-time, claimed third overall. But capturing th e crowd's heart at H ollister was Yam aha's Broc Glover.
