Bu t m y course was West - West in to th e Litch- ' fields, th ose emera ld h ills roll ing like wa v es. M otorcycl e T errit ory! I wan ted something with m uscle and p icked up a Nin ja, a lX-I O w ith prodigal torq ue. And w hen I rode off on th at steamy big bike, it was im me diately a com parison of each dyna m ite m ile - my Californ ia favorites and these Connecticu t LOs. And I dream ed w ide awake this was some speci al blend of R ider's Utopia. A bicoastal playgrou nd with a m in d of its own. Wqw! Was that th e Pacific's Big Su r that shot out before me - what?! - lined with Ya nkee barns fl ying our American flag! 44 West swooped and switched to 33 No rth! Was this my Santa Clarita, or th eir Farm ingt on Valley? Westward I went, on thro ug h the country. On e inst ant the view was all flying seeds, th e next it was v istas of old desert runs. Dry sage flashed in to lush forests. Sudden w hite church sp ires becam e distan t ado be missions. Th ermal blasts, cool uiood- , land breezes. Th is Con necticut R oad I was riding grew darker, quicker, div ing hard through glens scented richly with trees. Were th ey H em lock s? R edwoods? R oadside deer warnings got to be slic k cattle guards. Were those barn swallows fl ying, or sea hawks? Was it a gurgling brook I ju st crossed ove r, or a windy arroyo? Well, I didn 't know w hic h! Didn 't care, either! Away I sped p ast sweet flo w ered meadows and pa rch ed chaparral. Deeper and deeper in to m y odd double ride, into th is fan tasy vision th rou gh two states at once. Past Winsted and Golita, Pism o and Canaan, Salis bury and beyond; and , ' rem ote Monterey. Th e road was a , th rill in every sweep turn, in to .eacb sud den corner and breathl ess new chute. A nd at last I was w here my good frien ds live, up on a h ill by Sh aron, under th e battl e song of a fa st- co m ing storm. Ca li fornians ' once, now and forever of th is Con necticu t eden. Yeah! I was in two ' places. On tuiovoads. T wo rides! And all was perfectly right with the W'II'lam Ed gar , world.
