Smith LAWRENCEBURG, IN, JUNE 3 Pete Hook took the hol eshot in th e Open class o n hi s H onda th en opened a 20 foot lead that never narrowed in Lawrenceburg short track racing. With Hook out front, th e racing action was up to Arthur Tresser and Grady Phillips. They went handlebar-to-handlebar until th e finish with Tresser in front at ' the end on his Wood-Rotax. In th e 80cc class, Daniel Do tson from Indianapolis put the pressure on local riders in a clo se run for first pl ace. Brian Knippenberg ga ve him a run for his money and took second. Matt Auxier a nd Ben Bellman were another pair wh o kep t the fans' attentio n , as they battled for th ird , switch ing back' a nd forth fro m lapto-la p. Auxier was th ere when it counte d th ou gh and logged a .third pl ace fin ish. Grad y Phillips took the 250cc class in a clear victor y over number-two fin isher Larry Pegram. A respe ctable th ird pl ace went to T om my Hensler as he pu t his I25cc H onda up against the bigger mach in es. The O pen B class was an interesting mix, listed for Beginners, 250cc and above and Old Timers over 30. T wo of th e Seni ors took th e two pl aces out fro nt, with Bill Montgomery taking th e win . Inge's doub'es at Cal Expo Speedway By RC Jones SACRAMENTO, CA, J UNE 8 Eddi e In gels took a dou bl e victo ry for th e first tim e by winning both Scratch and Handica p mai n events du rin g speedway action at Cal Expo. In gels, aboard hi s Peterich Cycles/ A&A Racing/Cham p ion/K&N Filters/Sierra Products/Bell-spon sored G-M scored th e double after eigh t weeks of racing on th e tough Ca l Expo tra ck. Jim Sisemore pl aced second in th e H andicap main and a fourth in th e Scra tch main. Bill Zirkl e moved up to Division Two and won th e main event hi s first tim e o ut. J ohn Pi erce pi cked up hi s second win this seaso n in Division Three. Sisem ore chased Ingels throughou t th e six-lap Handicap race. As the main unfolded, J oe Leduc was out in front with a comfortable lead aft er four laps. Ingels and Sisemo re had been trying; to get within striking range. of Leduc for most of th e race wh en Leduc's froni tir e sta rt ing bouncing from hitting a hol e as he entered turn one. . As Leduc went wide to correct h is error, Ingels do ve inside and streaked past for the 1ead as the white flag ou t. Before Leduc cou ld recover , Sisemore also slipped past, leaving Leduc to fight off th e no w charging Bob Hi cks. Hi cks al so tried to sneak past the faltering Ledu c, but Leduc held off H icks with a mad dash over th e last 50 yards, taking thi rd by a whe el " length. After a bri ef rest, Ingel s lined back up for the prem ier Scratch main event. Hi cks had th e pole position wi th Rober t Curry next to him in ga te two , and Sisemore in gate three. That left In gels in his favorite spot, on the far ou tside in gate fou r. In gels shot ou t of the starting gate takin g away the inside edg e from Hi cks as th ey entered turn o ne. Sisemore went too wid e an d dropped to fourth leavin g Curry to battle with Hi cks. Hicks took a short lead over Curry as they went do wn the back chute . On lap two Cu rry moved inside of Hicks, passing H icks as th ey exi ted the turn . Ingels meanwhile was gone, putting on a sho w for the crowd. The race was for second, and a lap lat er H icks swa pped pos it ions wi th Curry to tak e back the second sp ot. On the last lap, Curry mad e a desperate move ·to get past Hi cks, bu t Hicks held his ground to finis h beh ind Ingels. Bill Zir kle was able to take the checkered flag wi th a win over Dou g Mign an o and Dave Worthen. It was Zirkle's first ride with the Division T wo gro up after starting the season in Division Three. Zirkl e had take n h is Weslake to two wi ns in Division Three ma ins before tonight's Division T wo race. Getz and Newell were tied after th e first loop which had an 18 mph speed avera ge. H ow ever, on th e second loop Ge tl dropped one less' point at each 01 the lour timed checks in th e second loop to finis h with a to tal ofTf points in a steady do wn po ur of rain that started abo u t two hours " before key tim e and contin ued to fall throughou t the event. Both C etz and Newell had to overcome problems to finish. Getz had a flat fro nt tire, and Newe ll had a broken shift lever and he completed most of th e second loop with hi s bi ke in third gear. Ricky Alexander. ., Hadlock hot at FernleyMX By Kathi Davis FERNLEY, NV, MAY 22 Robbie Hadlock was th e rider to beat in both the Open and 250cc Expert classes a t the Fernley MX tra ck today. Hadlock was the dominant force in the Open Expert class with impressive wins in both motos, but his 250cc Expert class win was a tougher battle. In the first 250cc Expert moto Dane McCombs got the holeshot coming out of the starting gate and set o u t on a pace that would keep him in the lead for the whole rnoto. Hadlock was hot on his trail and tri ed to pass ,several times but McCombs n ever gave him an opening. But in th e second moto it was Hadlock in th e lead after one lap with McCombs foll owing. The two of them stayed this way to the end of the moto wh ich gave Hadlock the win for the da y with his better second moto fini sh. . . The 60cc clas s also had exciting racing with Dave Roberts and Jeff Baldw in trading pl aces both motos. Bu t Roberts wo n th e tie-br eaking second mo to to give h im th e win for the day. One of the most exci ting classes of th e day was the 80cc No vice B class. Reggie La ndberry dominated by easi ly winnin g both motos.
