PO RTLAND, OR, JUNE 5 Shawn R o b ert i ca p p ed a rapid p rogressi on of improvement by aci ng o u t J oe Pittman in two of the four P roduction classes at the . Oregon Motorcycle Road Racing Associa tion's sprint ra ces at Portland Interna tional Raceway. Rober ti and Pittman passed and rep assed during th e 600 Producti on fin al, but Roberti was in the lead when th e checkered flag dropped. Roberti ma y have benefited from a crash-shortened heat in 750cc P ro du ction. He jumped to an ear ly lead, but Pi tt ma n was dogging h is fear wh eel by the six th lap of th e lO la p final , when a downed rider in the middle of the track brought out the red flag . The race was over ha lfcomp lete a nd Pittman will have (0 wait until July to try and get around Roberti. " I' ve been lucky enough to be ab leto keep th e fast riders in sigh t and learn from them ," Rob erti said. " It 's a big jump to passing th ese guys and making it stick, but I finall y did it. " T he best raci ng performance of th e day wa s 'by Scott Fredricks, but it doesn 't show in the results because Fredr icks was pen a lized for letting an a lleged friend blast around th e pi ts on hi s race bike. Fredricks won th e first heat of th e Open Single GP, then tried a pass on th e first lap of the second heat a nd had to run off o n the exit road. H e circled around through pre-grid and over the starting grid, rejoining the pack 25 seconds down on the . leaders, and wo rking hi s way back to second in just six laps: Fredricks seemed to tak e the disqualifica tion more philosophically th an his compe titors. Mike Meagher, wh o won the class , said, "I hope this doesn 't discourage Scott from raci ng -. H e's a little rough, but he 's tal ent ed. I enjoy racing with him." Kei th Pinkstaff lowsided ou t of turn fo ur in the 750cc Superbike four-lap q ualifier, putting a nas ty bruise on his hip and biting his tongue hard enough to bleed profusely. Then, while leading Pittman in Open Production, Pinkstaff got a nos e bl eed and had severe visibility probl ems. . " I've got en o ugh trouble trying to beat Pittman," Pinkstaff said , " with o ut being half blind while I'm trying to do it." Pinkstaff h ung in f9[.S~c0l'!d place fin ishes behind Zlock Racing teammate .P itt man in Open P roductio n, 750cc Superbike and F- l. There was a brief bu t intense rai n shower during the 600cc Su perbike, a nd before the end of the lO lap hea t there ' were at least eight crashed motorcycles parked around the slippery tra ck. Brian Sutton appeared unaffected by the limited ·traction , and was turning la ps -10 seconds faster than anyone else 011 th e tra ck.
