It was Morehead 's th ird straight wi n in th e charity event and th at earned th e " Findlay Flyer" th e H arry Kelley. Sr. Memorial Fund prize, wh ich at the tim e of th e race to talled over $5250 in stocks a nd bonds. Morehead also won th e even ing's nigh tca p , th e 2nd Ann ua l Edgar Fuhr Dash for Cas h that awarded the win ner wi th $ 1000. In addi tion, Moreh ead poc keted a large su m of cont inge ncy prizes, as did Junior fin al winner Kevin Ath erton and P ro -Am mai n eve nt win ner Pa t Beh rle. . Fast Expert tim e was posted by th e red-ho t Morehead , a 26.342 tour of th e Mon tgomery Cou nty Fairg ro u n ds o va l. Kevin Ath erton opened eyes wh en he turned in a 26.395 la p to to p the Junior class en tra nts. Onl y Mo rehead 's lap was q uicke r. P ro-Am quali fyi ng h eats were won by Kyle Lon g, Dave Rab in ette and Behrle. The four Junior heats were wo n by Atherton, Dan Bu tler, And y T resser and Don Martin. . Morehead won th e first heat desp ite a dra~gin & brak e and p.re~ su re fro m Darnn Erichse n , wh o finished second. Do n Estep took th ird. Chris Carr ow ned the second heat and it was Dan In gram second and Brian ~ arin taki ng second and third, respectively, to adva nce to the lOman main. Dou g Davis won th e th ird heat and led George Roeder II and Dave H ebb into the ma in, as well as Bob Sweeten who was in th e lucky fourth place spot in the fastest heat. Lon g had th e pol e for the Pro-Am main, but ].]. McDow ell had the holeshot a nd th e lead aft er one lap. By the halfway point McDowell had a com fortable lead over Pat Behrle, Long, Steve Marth and the field , but A.]. Snoop went down o n the sev-enth lap and brought out the red flag. Behrle made th e most of the restart and took hi s Western Hills H ondasponsored Honda to the win ahead of McDowell. The Junior main was all Kevin Athert on 's as the Michigan rider set sail from the pole on the Ron W ood! Perry's H-D / AraiiTsubakilHog Wash /Sunoco /Faver Sawmill/ NHI/ M&D .Rotax and flat di sappeared from the field to tak e the win handily. . As easy as was Atherton's win ni ng romp, so was the difficulty in gaining a n advantage behind him. At checkered flag tim e it was Tresser second, some six seconds beh ind th e winner, and Don Harrell third. Morehead led th e Expert main field into th e first tum although a ma lf un ction ing b ra ke master cyli nder o n hi s H ank Scott XR750 co ntin ued to plague him. Roeder ra n second, and fin ished there desp ite stalking Morehead a ll the way, ahead of a battle for th ird between Carr and Davis th at would end up with Carr, aboard a single-cylinder H arley, third and XR7 50-mo u n ted Davis fourth. Moreh ead 's bik e was taken back to its pit area by tuner Hank Scott as Morehead accep ted th e acco lades of the crowd and a pocketfu ll of contin gency mon ey. Scott wanted the bike to be right for th e Dash for Cash. Whil e the five fastest Ex pert qual ifiers pr epared for the Dash , th e crowd was treat ed to a very sp irited exh ibi tio n race between G eorge Roeder Sr. a nd Ronnie Rail wh o rode their vintage dirt trackers. With hi s bike's brakes now work in g properly, Morehead was go ne right after th e sta rt of th e Dash for Cash and Carr, Roeder, Davis and Estep could only foll ow h im . Results EX: 1. Gonzalez talces Discover Today's WomenMX By David Procida PERRIS, CA, JUNE 4 Mercedes Gonzalez, Lori Hedstrom and Andrea Chamberlin were the top riders today in th e SMX-hosted Discover T oday's Women MX event. In the first Expert Pro mo to, Tina Clary used th e power of her Dirt U nlt d/ Pro Cir cui t/O 'Neal- sp onsored Honda to take the lead. Beh ind her, Kawasaki KXl2 5-rider Leslie Crabl e-Lancaster had her han ds full with Vicky Jackson, Lisa Peterson, and a bike's len gth behind, the remainder of the Expert class . Clary pulled away from CrableLancaster as the pack closed in on the Kawasaki pilot. Moving up through th e pack was number-oneranked Gonzalez. Gonzalez powered h er AXO /S cou/Sh oeilMaxima / Dunlop/DMClTeam Green Kaw asaki KXI25 from a back-of-the-pack sta rt int o 'the number three slot in five corners and was behind J ackson. The riders began to sort th em selves out and as Clary led the class up into th e hillside esses; Gon zalez dove to the inside of Jackson to take the number two positio n. Clary was first to go through the tricky u p hill hairpin corner, follo wed by Gonzalez and J ackson. Wh en Cra bl e-La ncaster made her pi vot to go down the hill, the fro nt tire of her KX ska ted, almost pu tti ng her o n th e ground. She moved wit h th e slide and saved it by usin g th e outside berm, but th is allowed Peterson to slip by. At th e fro nt of th e pack, Gonzalez p ulled to th e rea r fender of Clary and was studying her li nes. Sh e kept th e pressure on Clary as th e two riders ' diced on th e infield sectio n of th e track. G on zal ez stuc k h er front tire alongside Clar y in th e hairpin corne r a nd fin ally made her move on th e foll owing tabl etop. Gonzalez hit th e base of the jump a heartbeat behind Clary and sho t up, over and beyond the H onda rider, into th e lead. Once in th e lead , th e Team Green r ider. began to p u ll away whil e J ack son cl osed the gap between herself and Clary. Crable-Lancaster hadn 't give n u p and was holdin g off Mindy Sm ith and the Suzuki Country .Racing girls , T am i Rice and . Bonnie Warch. The four -r ider fr ei ght tra i n remained intact for th e next few laps before Rice, after mak in g a pass on Warch, sta lled her RMI25 in th e scoring tower switch back. Gonzalez extended her lead , whi le J ackso n finally fou nd a lin e around Clar y wi th Peterson foll owing her lead . Peterson cl o sed o n J a ck son 's H onda and foreced her to pick up th e pace. Sm ith and Warch were di cing wi.th Crable-Lancaster, who was holding off the both of them. T he tri o en tered th e bow l corner with each one using a separa te line and exited it three abreast in a dr ag race for th e tab letop. . Smi th left th e throttle on longer than anyone , a nd she led th e o ther two into the following corn er. As th e moto came to- a close Gonzalez took a co mfortable wi~ wh ile J ackson rema ined ahea d of Peterson. Cla ry took fourth wi th th e n~xt few positions remaining close Dayton w inner Steve Mo~ehead more than $6.000. too~ home all the way to the finish as Smith held off Rice, Lancaster and Warch . In the second moto, Clary came off the line in mid-field and used an outside line to power h er way to the front as she entered th e first turn. Gonzalez, J ackson and Lancaster ca me th rou gli th e co rner threeabr east wit h th e pack on ly a fraction of a second beh ind. . Clary's lead was short-lived this moto as G onzal ez quickl y went ahead with J ackson in tow . CrableLancaster was leading Peterson and Sm ith wi th Rice a ttem p ting to get aro u n d Wa rc h . R i ce m ade an atte~ p t .to pass. War ch using an outside hne leading up to th e hairp i n , a n d clip ped Warch 's bike sending both riders to the ground: R ice landed hard, breaki ng her ann on impact. Warch assis ted Rice off th e tra ck and signed the paramedics before reentering the race. Back at th e front of the pa ck, Go nzal ez was running away wi th the lead while J ackson pulled away from Cl ary. Crabl e-La ncast er wa tche d fourth disappear as Peterson flew past over th e grandsta nd tabl etop Jump. T he race wound do wn with the riders positions stay ing intact as Gonzallez took th e checkered and the overa ll. Mindy Smith rounded out th e top five overa ll positions with a 5-6.
