One person who definitely had the right tires was Franco Rossi who led for five laps before bailing out in style, fortunatel y unhurt. Once he was gone, three men were left clear of th e pa ck - Vim ond, Lach er a nd Carlqvist. Their order never cha nged but th e battle on th e terribly slippery surface as the light ra in cont in ued to the finish was su perb. Vimond said, " I tr ied to ri de cons istently for the entire race. I think my lap times were consistent ri ght until th e last lap . I kn ew there was o n ly one pl ace where La cher co u ld pass me , a nd I co ncentra ted all m y efforts o n making no mistakes th ere. Tha t ma kes u p for the awful sta rt I had in ra ce one. " " T wice I managed to get alo nside J acky," sa id La cher, " but I could never quite sq ueeze past. In the last three laps I kn ew th at th e overa ll victory was mine if I didn't make any mistakes, so I was happy to fini sh second unless Jacky did som ething silly." Carlqvist said, "I felt really good and I was hoping that it would rain harder. I a m sure I could've won. I didn't get tired this time, but I made a mistake five la ps from th e end a nd lost contact with Lacher for a ti me, but it was too big a risk on this su rface to a ttac k too hard o n th e last lap even th ough I ca ug ht up again." Geboers mad e life hard o n h im self. He said, " I was in sixth pl ace on th e first lap but I made a mistake and stalled th e motor. That lost me many places." H e was still th e firs t ma n home of th e three ti tle cand ida tes, passing Nicoll for fourth with IO mi n utes to the finish. Nicoll was a ngry wi th him self. " I ha ve on ly got myself to blame," he said. " I ga mbled o n it no t raining and fitted hard-tra ck ti res. I had no grip a t all after th e first few laps and precious little th en." Thor pe , wh o was engaged in a ba ttle with Nicoll after 15 minutes, dropped to sevent h a t o ne stage before a fall by Geukens ga ve him sixth again. "I fell wh en .I was behind Kurt (Ni coll ), but I cam e back strongl y and even repa ssed Eri c (Geboers)," T h o r p e said. " Bu t then J a ck y (Martens ) went through a pool of wat er when I was chasing him a nd I had to throwaway my goggles. As if that wa sn 't bad enough, I th en got a stone in my rig h t eye a nd I was riding almos t bl ind!" Marten s was also in tro u ble and even tuall y finish ed at th e back of a whol e pa ck of top eig ht candidates whose hopes had been fru strated by th e superb ridi ng of Carlqvist and La ch er. In the end Ba nks fought hi s wa y to th e fro nt of the trai n ahead of Anstie, Geuken s, Liles and Martens as th ey a ll fin ish ed ' in T horpe's wheel tracks. Liles had a hard race through the pack after going do wn on th e fir st la p . " I go t sidewa ys . a nd Boonen couldn't a voi d hi tt ing m e," sai d L iles. " After th at I had no front brake." Van der Ven had been kn ocked into the tir es on th e first lap after a poor start a nd h is injured foot restricted him in his charge to 12th as Vimond snatch ed hi s fourth win of the series. • Results OVERALL: 1.
