The race. however. wasn 't deci ded until th e fin al tum wh en J ames tossed h is Suzuki Ka tana away under bra king while trying to ride around the o ut side of Sadowski. The Exeter. New Hampshire rider th en coas ted across th e line with th e victo ry firmly in hand. Seco nd p lace wa s inherited by Do ug Po len o n the Yoshimuraback ed Suzuki , with J ohn Ash mea d crossing th e line th ird on his H onda CBR600 Hurric an e. Mike H ar th a nd J ohn Ra msay rou nded out the top five. Sadowski set the tone for the final whe n he beat Polen in the firs t heat nice o n Saturday. T he fin al featured chaos before it even started. J eff H ackett and J onat ha n Reh euser co llided on th e gri d en route to the warm-u p lap, knocking Pol en over in th e process a nd bending his brake lever. Nei ther of th e two offenders started th e race. Wh en th e flag dropped. it was pri vateer Sadowski taking the lead right off the bat with James and H a rt h giving chase. Po len was fifth a t the end of lap one. foll o wing fourth-p laced Scott Ru ssell. On th e second lap, Richa rd Burdi ck tossed hi s Ho nda away exiting tum 10. th e bike slamming into th e wall and the n chasing down offi cials by the start/ finish line. The battle for third was intense wi th H arth leading Ru ssell , Polen . and John Ra msa y. On tli e fifth lap. R ussell put himself out of th e race when he cras hed in turn eight. The rest of - the order stayed th e same; Pol en co uld n't catch the two battling u p fro nt. and James finally th rew it away in the final corner. " It was on th e verge of being on its side every lap." J am sa id momen ts after the cras h. " I set u p high to go underneath coming out, but I don 't kno w wha t ha p pened." Sado wski nail ed th e ho leshot and led wire- to-wire. topping fell ow New H ampsh ir e resident J eff H eino, wh o came fro m the back of th e pack, and Georgia's Sco tt Russell. Sadows ki a n d hi s S u zuki GSXR 750 ac tua lly led two races . as the firs t portion of the event was redflagged whe n Ca lif ornia n Jam es Domay cras hed in turn 10 on th e seco nd la p. Sadowski the n had to do it again on the follow ing gree n flag, but he led Russell and Mik e Ha rth at the end of the firs t lap. At th is po int. Heino was up to sixth and charging to the front. By th e fourth la p . Sadowski led Ru ssell by 2.2 seconds with H eino clos ing in thi rd p lace. and H art h ho ldin g fourth. Doug Pol en , meanwhi le. was running eig ht h o n a 600cc Katana in 'a field of 32 GS XR750s. " T hey didn 't bring my 750," Polen sa id. " I don't kn ow why . . ." Yo shimura ' s Mr. Wa ta nabe ex p lained: "Too ma ny bik es. We ca n win th e 750. I wa n t to win the 600. Wh en we win o ne (600cc class ) we may qui t. but if we q uit now. people wi ll th ink we are losers. It's too ma ny races a nd too da ngerous for Doug. Ou r p rio ri ty is the Superbi ke." Sadowski he ld his lead to the finis h with H ein o getting past the sliding Russell o n la p 12 of th e 17lap race. Harth held on to finish - fourth ahea d of Ja mie James. " No t enough track time." Ru ssell said of hi s th ird place finis h. " It proba bly wo uld have paid to come up here last weekend." . H eino. who was o n Mich elins whi le th e o the r two in th e winner 's circle used Dunlops, sa id, " I starte d dead last. I wish I co uld have started with " Ski" (Sado wski ) because I would hav e gone for it." " I was di sappointed to see the red flag." Sadowski said. " I didn 't th ink I co uld br eak a way aga in.
