The on ly o ther tea m on th e lead lap was Northwest H onda Racing 's VFR7 50 ri dden by Ronnie Lunsford, Matt Maschmann, G len n H eintsch el, Jr. a nd Wayn e Even. T eam Scream 's Brian Graver too k the lead on the first lap on the ir Suzuki GSXRIIOO, with Northwest H o nda righ t behind as they bo th pulled away from th e field. The Screamers grad ually o u tdista nced Bob Lunsford 's North west H o nda , and by la p 28 they were one lap ahead. No rt hwest soon managed to u nl ap themse lves, bu t within a few la p s, Scream had again p u t them a lap down. Du ri ng the seco nd hour, Scream put a second lap on Northwest while they pitted, but Northwest passed Scream back to unlap th emselves by o ne. Northwest continued to hang tough until the fifth hour when they took the lead wh ile Scream pitted with tire trouble. . Mik e R yan co u ldn't ga in any gr ound on H ein tsch el, so Scream pi tted a nd sent ou t fast ride r craig Gleaso n. Even was bein g caught by Gleason a t abo u t six to eight seconds a la p as Gleason was tu rnin g 1:53 la p times. It was a drama tic finish as Gleason co ntinued to close. The Screame rs caugh t Northwest H onda on lap 174 a nd passed them in th e very fast turn two, pu tting a straig h taway betw een them to wi n th e ba ttl e. Northwest H onda was seco nd overa ll and first in the H eavyweight Production class. BMH Raci ng took third overall , first in Middl eweigh t Su perbike, on their H onda 600 Hurricane, ridden by Ken H arvey, Rob ert Bra dlaw a nd Andre Vanderb urg. With Su zuki posti ng conti ngen cies for th e A, B and C Producti on classes, riders Mike Harth a nd J am ie J ames stayed ove r from Saturday's end ura nce nice to have a go at the funds. After a leisurel y start in C P rod uction, Pol en took off a fter J ames and Wesley Win ch ester , all three riding Su zuki 600 Ka tanas. J o h n Tauzi n, on a Hurri cane, was havin g a tough ti me, but he rode an excellent race to finish seco nd behind Polen, with J ames in th ird. A Production started with Team Suzuki's H a rth ta king th e lead followed by Po len. While th ese two were nos e-to-tail on th e main straight, they were clocked at 150 mph by a radar gun . Mea nwhile, beh ind the dynamic duo , a batt le was raging between G len n H eintscheI, J r. and Bri tt Turkington. H ein tshel would take ove r o n the straight leading to th e start / finish lin e and Tu r kin g ton wo u ld pass in the in fie ld. At the end o f the race, H eintsch el used his superior horsep ower to draft T u rki ngton and narro wly take third by a whee l. T he duo had been clocked a t 146 mph. Po len too k th e win handily over H art h who in tu rn was way a head of the third pl ace ba tt le. Guillermo Vill areal was fifth overa ll a fter a grea t sta rt tha t cooked hi s tires. McDowell doubles at Hills Ferry ST By Mikki McBrid e NE WMAN, CA, J U N E 5 Bob by McDow ell rode h is H onda to victory in bo th th e Pro-Am and 500cc Open Expert ra ces at Hills Ferry af ter winning both ot his hea ts. In th e O pe n Expert main Steve Ma yfield sho t into the lead o n his Rot ax but McDow ell was by h im on th e o utside o f th e back stra ig h taway . After that, McDowell was gone a nd th ere was no catching him. Mayf ield con ti n ued to ride hard, hanging on to second while 'H arley-Davidso n rider Jaime Aguilar worked hard to main tain third p lace as Steve Raymond tried to ge t around him o n hi s Rotax, Ra ym ond finally go t th e chance o n the front stra igh t and sa iled by Agui lar o n the inside. McDowell was so far ahead of the pack th a t he sta rted lapping riders by the time he went by th e white flag. H e continued p icking them off on the last lap. Ma yfi eld was seco nd , R a ymo n d th ird, Aguilar fourth with Eric G reen in th e fifth spot. In th e P ro -Am main , McDowell was off th e line a nd into the lead ah ead o f Woody R o g er s on a Yamaha. Ag uilar grabbed fourth but Ro tax rider Kevin Bri cker passed him on the inside whe n Ag uilar went wide. Bricker tu rn ed o n th e gas and sai led by Rogers on the ba ck stra ig h t taking over third. Then Da n ie l McDonnell came from nowhere o n his H o nda to ge t by Bricker. No t to be o u tdo ne, Michael G re-sha m moved th rough the pack a ll th e way to fourth p lace by th e checkere d flag. McDowell was an easy first followed by Harl ey rider T ed T aylor in seco nd. McDon nell was third and Bri cker fifth. A su rprise came in the 250 cc Novice class. Michele DiSal vo riding a H onda came in first desp ite being knocked off her bike by Robb y P e ichor o . P e ich o ro was dow n between tu rn o ne and two and was scraped up sligh tl y. DiSal vo seemed as surprised at her win as th e ot her ride rs, but sh e was grinning from ear to ear. Ferravantis, Argano top Paso Robles ST By Mike Vancil PASO ROBLES, CA, JUNE 4 The home town father and son tea m of Gary Ferravanti a nd Gary Junior wowed the fans in taking top honors in the 600cc Pro fessio nal and 80cc Mi ni Jun ior finals, respecti vel y at the California Mid-State Fair. In the first of the Ferr avan ti wi ns , it was the yo u nger Gary that had to line up la st as he di d no t get to race in th e hea t rac e which gives better starting posi tions to hi gher finish in g riders. At the green light it was Ma tt Wi llard o n a Kawasak i, sponsored by Willard Construction , who go t the better dri ve into the first co rner. H owever, Ferravanti was a lrea dy on the charge a nd was only abo u t three feet o u t of the lead as the pair exited turn two. By th e tim e the riders exited turn four and finished the first lap, Ferravanti was in the lead and he kept h is Ya maha, sponsored by 53
