By Cind y Bowen TALLADEGA, AL, JUNE 4,5 First year Expert Mike Smith and Novice Roger Minor took hom e four Sprint class wins each ' at Alabama In tern a tional Motor Speedway.. Twenty-two-year-old Smith from Canton, Georgia gave Texan Doug Polen a ru n for his money in th e Middlewei~ht Supersport class. Po len's Suzuki Katana was no match for Sm ith's Honda Hurricane. Polen got the holeshot and led the field into turn one followed by Mike Harth, David Clyde, John Eide nberger and Smith. By the secon d lap , Smith had moved through the pack and passed Polen off the apron and onto th e fro nt straight. Polen and Smith sw a p ped th e lead several times throughout th e race while G reg Tysor, Eidenberger and Harth battled for thi rd. On th e final la p , Smith passed Polen on the ba nking for the win with Tysor finis hing third. Scott Ru ssell seemed to be Polen 's biggest com petition in the contingen cy races. In the Heavyweight Supersport race it was H art h leading, followed by Paul Bray and Russell, all Georgia boys . R ussell passed Bra y on th e banking to take over second as Po len began closing the gap on the two. Russell passed Harth on the front straight to take over the lead going into the second lap, and began to pull aw ay' from the field . Polen worked his way past Bray and Harth and began to whittle away at Russell's 20 bike length lead. R ussell went into turn two, a left-bander, tou ched down his gearshift, knocking the bik e into neutral and allo wing Pol en to mov e in a little closer. By lap four, Polen was side-by-sid e with Russell down th e front straig ht and th e two were neck-and-neck for th e rem ainder of th e ra ce. On th e final lap, Russell went Iow an th e banking, Pol en went high, dropped down in Russell's draft onto the fron t stra igh t and in ched by for th e win by a wheel-length. Russell came back in the Unl im ited Supersport class to defeat Pol en by the' same narrow margin. H arth led for o ne-a nd-a-half laps wh en Russell bla sted past o n th e banking. T he speed difference was so great that Harth co u ldn 't get in hi s draft. It took three laps for Polen to catch and pa ss Harth but once lie did, he and Russell put about 20 seconds on third place. • . Polen moved within one bi ke length of Russell on · th e fifth la p. Recalling th e 750cc race , Russell changed hi s last la p strategy for thi s ra ce and went high into the banking, out of the apron and onto the straight. Polen couldn't get in his draft soon enough off the banking to get by and R ussell took the checkers by half a bike len gth . This was the fastest race of the day with an average speed of I I I mph. For their efforts, Polen pocketed $1750 a nd Russell received $1200.
