Bob Len k, a former Cycle N ews staff member who now sells advertising for the AMA's monthly magazine, American Motorcycl ist, produced and directed th is commendabl e add i tion to the li b rary of motorcycling vide otapes: With th e excep tion of co mmen tary by MOlOWorld 's Larry Maiers, the one-hour VHS videotape is a one-man show. And th at man is Lenk. H e came up with the idea, lugged h is camera equipment from one end of Gatorback to the o ther and then back again co u ntless times , ed ited th e ta pe, typed out th e hundreds of resul ts which ap pear superim posed on th e foo tage, overdubbed the mus ic, etc., etc., etc. " I' m pl eased wit h th e effort,' said Lenk. " Like everyt hi ng, there are thin g s th a t co u ld have been improved, but ove rall I th ink I caught on tape th e atmosphere that makes the Mini Ol ympics special." Bill West, promoter of the event, agrees: 'Thad m y doub ts wh en Len k presen ted his idea to me. I really di dn 't thin k anyone cou ld compress a multi-da y event like the Florida MiniOlympics into a one-hour tape a nd rea ll y show what it 's all about, but Len k di d it." While the maj ority of the tape is righ tfully devoted to the racing action, th ere are interesting segme n ts like an interview wi th Mik e and Anne Adair, who have covered the event for Cycle N ews for over a decade, interviews with the manufac- turer 's represen ta tives, and views of post-race ac tivities. We could have do ne wi thout the " th is is what motocross is" and "this is what su percross is" explanations by Maiers, although we must say th e rest of his commentary is - as always - . top-notch.
