Dale Quarterley (32) lapped the field en route to the Pro Twins GP win; here he leads Doug Brauneck (1) before the Dr. John's Moto-Guzzi broke. Local rider Gary Stas inherited the Pro Twins Modified Production victory when Kevin Erion crashed . Stas was very enthusiastic about his win . Kevin Erion finished second in the Pro Twins GP class. but crashed wh ile leading j ust two laps from the finish in the Modified Production race . Quarterl ey leapt into the lead from the drop of the flag , leadi ng Brauneck a nd Ada mo across the stripe at th e end o f th e first lap . Lo ng was next followed by Kieffer and Real. Erion was seventh . By th e end of the seco nd lap, the leading duo had put a gap on Adam o, who wou ld p it a lap later , a nd then rejoin the fray nine la ps down. After four laps, th e lead ing duo led th e battle for th ird between Long and Kieffer by over 12 seconds . eco nds a fter start ing the fifth lap , Kieffer clipped Lo ng's rear wh eel on th e from straigh t sett ing up for (u rn on e. What foll ow ed was a horrific cra sh . Kieffer went down hard a nd was brieflv knocked un co nscious , whi le Longma na ged to maintain co nt ro l. Two laps la ter it was Long's turn as he cra shed in turn eight. No w the battle for third was between Real a nd Erio n. Quarterl ey was beginning to p u t space between him self a nd Brauneck o n th e Dr. J ohn's ' M OIO Guzzi. . On lap eigh t Eri on got past Real , but by lap 12 was over 50 seco nds -beh ind Brauneck. Quarterley, meanwh il e, had pulled o u t o ver' 10 seco nds on Brauneck by lap 13. On th e 16th lap, Quaner ley lapped th ird-placed Erio n. On th e 19th lap, Brauneck 's Guzzi sna p ped a .ca rn drive pin. " We' re using heavier sp rings and it 's o verstressed," Dr. J o h n sa id later. "It was th e second one this weekend, but th ere was no wa y to fix th e - prob lem here." Th e final six laps wer e cl ear sa iling for Quart erl ey. Erion held on for second wit h Real th ird. " It was the first time out o n the bi ke," Er io n sai d. AMA Pro Twins Modified Production Series: Round 3 Stas wins Twins at,Loudon By Paul Carruthers , Photos by Henny Ray Abrams LACONIA, NH, JUNE 18 Gary Stas made it a Massachusetts sweep of the P ro T wi ns classes with his ,win in th e Mod ified P roducti on final on Sa tu rday a t Brya r Moto rsport Park. Stas a nd hi s Ducati took advantage o f Da ytona a nd Road Atl anta winner Kevin Erion 's crash two laps from the end to win th e 19-1ap affair. Seco nd place went to Peter Johnso n wi th J. Crai g Sham ba ug h third. "I kn ew I couldn't get by him (Erio n) ," Stas sai d aft er pushing the Ca liforn ia n for mos t of th e race. " But I kn ew it wo uld , be close. I was pressi ng him, a lways keeping the p ress u re on, but Kevin had so much motor up the hill a nd th rough eight and 10." At the start it was Erion jumping to an immediate lead over Blaine Paulus j r., Sham baugh and J ohnson. Stas was fifth across the sta rt! fini sh line a t the end of th e first lap . By the second lap, however, he was fo u rth, and a la p la ter he was th ird. O n lap four, Stas was second and mak ing a ru n a t the charging Erio n. J ohnson, meanwh ile, held contro l o f thi rd with Shambaugh a sa fe fo urth . After six la ps, Stas was 2.5 seconds behind Erion, a nd three laps later' he was cha llengi ng for the lead. On lap 17, Er ion lost th e front end in tu rn six. " I did th e sa me thin ~ in p ractice," Eri on said. " It's m y first tim e here a nd it's a tou gh tra ck.
