Newell nea rly doubles at Berthoud MX By Larry Johnson 36 BERTHOUD , CO, MAY 22 Dave Newe ll came within two laps of h a vi n g a pe rfec t day a t the Berthoud mo tocross races. H e p ulled off a difficu lt sweep in the 250cc Pro s, and was on hi s way to doi ng th e sa me in the Open Pro s, wh en hi s KX500 faile d la te in moto two. Tim Buch li gated first in moto one o f the 250cc race a head of 1983 cha m p Boo Sti ch ter, who had not raced in four years . Stic hter q uic kly took the lead, bu t it was short-lived as Keith Campbell grabbed the top spot Campbell's lead o nly lasted into lap two, when Newell too k over. H e stayed ou t front the rest of the way, whi le Derek Brown tried despera tely to ca tch up during the last five laps. . Buchli led Jim Mitchell into turn one of ro und two, and led the first lap before Mitchell too k over. Brown found his way to the front on lap two , whi le Newe ll was picking off riders after a 10th-pl ace start. Newell reached third by lap five, but cou ld not find a way around Mitchell until after the wh ite flag . H is 'chances of catching Brown looked slim, but he managed to reel in the lead, and leaped past over th e pyra m id jump, three turn s fro m the fin ish. It was Newe ll 's first 250cc overa ll of the year. As us ua l, Ne well easi ly controlled moto one of the Opens on his Kawasaki, and was far ahead late in round two. Bu t as he ro lled by wi th two lap s to go, his bike sounded more li ke a diesel than a two-s tro ke. H is KX500's pipe bro ke, a nd most of its power was gone. First mot o runner- . up J im Eckert went past for th e win an d overall victory. Tim ' Buch li aced the 125cc P ros by beating Keith Campbell in each moto. And 80cc Expert cham p Andy Atki ns had . h is best day o n th e quarter-liters by p utting together two fou rt hs for third overall. PALM BEACH, FL, MAY 30 Todd Ousley, Bob Bossardet and Rick Shaw completely dominated AMA/CCS racing at Moroso Motorsports Park. Ousley captured three wins as did Bossardet, whi le Shaw won the Shoot-Out and Unlimited Supersport. David Kamps, the new est Novice sensation to hit the sou th, captured th ree wi ns to add to his Roebling Roadto tal, making seven for the weekend. T he 50 mile GTO race started under overcas t skies. Cant rell on his Spectro Oils-spo n so r ed Su zu ki GSXCR I IOO battled for the lead with Miam i rider Shaw. T he fight didn't last long, and by the fifth la p Shaw started slowing down. Thinking he had cu t a tire he pulled into the p its. It turned o ut to be nothing more than a .missing valve cap. By th e tim e he go t back up to speed, Cantrell had a th ree lap lead. At th e halfway point North Miami r ider Kevin Blai s, ridi ng his Florida Bail Bonds/ Shoei/ Mikun i -sp onsored Ka wasaki 750 Ninja slipped past Cantrell in traffic for the lead. A ligh t d rizzle began to fall which lasted about 10 minutes. When it stopped, Ca ntrell tu rned th e wick back up and blew by Blais on the back straight. At th e checkers it wa s Cantrell , Bla is a nd Da nn y . Rob erts o n his Palm Beach Suzuki/ Larson Pain ts-sponsored Suzuki 750 GSXR. In the GTU 50 mi ler it was Donald J acks on his Cycle Riders/ Michelin/ . Fo x/Ferodo/ Arai/ Bel -Ray / Mitch Marq ui -sponsored Honda 600 H urricane leading fromwire-to-wire. At the checkered flag he had a 45-second lead on Miami 's J ohn Choate. Choate, also riding a Honda 600, had wor ked ·his way' through a pac k of riders consisting of Mike Leh ning, . Glen n Ba rry, Mike Barnes a n d Carlos Casas . Newton H eston who was in th ird place wi th five lap s to go, had to slow down when it started rai n ing as he was riding on slicks. Casas, ru n n in g on trea ded tires, passed for th ird pl ace. Heston was fourt h and Glenn Barry fifth. Nov ice rider Ben Stowers, riding . a ' Yam aha RZ350 led the Lig htweigh t GP class to victory. The wat er o n th e track was severa l in ches deep on the back straight and the ra in was still corn ing down. Bill Kranenberg, o n a Suzuki, was the first Expert and third overall. Ousley, running hi s first race at Moroso as an Expert, captured wins in the . Hea vyweigh t Supersport, Heavyweight Superb ike, and U nlim - . ited Grand Prix classes. Fairgrounds, blowing up the co mpetition at the drop of the green to tak e the lead and wired the throttle open until th e checkers fell to win the O pen class. T he co mpetition trie d to follow Ca mlin up on hi s hi gh line bu t found the deep cus hion hard to make up ground in. That competitio n in cluded second pl ace fin isher Audi e Huff J r. on the Grayboy/Gar dener H-D and Greg Waggenknech t. But I the show belon ged to Cam lin as he kep t the large crowd runni ng for cover as he cu t laps in the 25s at the top over th e perfectly groomed track. The 200cc class led off the second . ha lf of the program wit h Chad Barth best ing Klause Brunner and Greg Pickens for the top spot. It took two heat s to sort out the 250s an d it looked like the Grayboy Kawasaki of Scott Huff was goi ng to slip away from the pa ck for an easy win in the main, when his motor went sou th on the fourth turn of the second la p. T hat made the battle for second a fight for the lead. Shaw n Wade , in hi s firs t outing of the season, put it all together on the last la p to get by Dan Carter for the win by inches. DC Cycle. p ilo t, Dan a McNeil, held off the challenges of Ken H all, for the th ird spot. Randy Blank ra n h is Suzuki under the checkers first in the 400cc final , beat ing Greg Ca lley and Gary Brennan for the win. In the Senio r fina l Ra nd y Love go t out fast and never looked back in taking th e wire-to -wire wi n over Steve Brinker and Les Eslinger. Audie Huff J r. made hi s presence felt wi th a wire-to-wire win in the 500cc final. Behind him it was the J oe Evans/Gene Knuth/Team DC
