Aaron Yonely turned back challenges by T odd Fal ey, Dave Brill and Rusty O tt in the l 25cc Expert class. Yonely charged off the ga te in moto one with Fal ey in tow. O tt and Brill followed. While Yonely held off Fal ey, Brill go t past Ott and moved up to challe nge Fal ey. Both Brill a nd Ott go t by Fal ey when he overs hot a berm, bu t were unab le to move up and pose any threat to Yon ely. The finis hing order a t the end on mo to one was Yon ely, Brill , Ott,and Faley. Yonely grabbed th e early lead in rnoto two, foll owed th is time by Brill. Brill challenged Yonely in th e early laps, but Yon ely was able to stre tch o ut a co mfortable lead by the end of th e moto, leaving Brill a n unchallenged second. Fal ey and Ott battled for third with Ott finally moving past Fal ey late in th e rnot o to tak e th e third spo t. Isakson again finished fifth. Domke SAN ANTONIO TX, JUNE 3 Denn y St ephen son, a Kaw asakimounted Expert , showed good form and a n aggressive ra cing style as he dominated both the 125ce and 250cc Expert classes at the AMA Mot ocross Nationals Amateur event at Goodtim es Motorsports Park. Stephenson got th e holeshot in th e first rnoto of the 250cc event and ran awa y with th e win. H owever, th e holeshot in the second rnot o was taken by Shannon Cook, another Kawasak i rider , who stre tched out h is lead until he dropped hi s bike on the secon d lap. Stephenson was never seriously challen ged after that. J eff Emig, also a Kawasaki rider, was an easy winner in the 125ccOpen class and ca ptured victory in the 125cc Interm edi ate class as well. Emig led bo th mo tos in the Open class wire -to-wire. Two challengers in th e first moto, Ch ris Ryan and J aso n Krempin, suffe red setbac ks in the second rnoto of the 125cc Open. Ryan fell and sustained injuries th at pu t him o u t of th e raci ng for the rest of the eveni ng. H e rod e his KXI25 to thi rd place in th e first rnot o, a nd was trying to better his pos itio n. J ason Krernpirr 's exce p tio nally smooth riding carried him to second place in the first moto. Bui a bad star t cost him a better second mot o, and he took fourth overall. However, he dominated th e I25cc Novice class, winning over Yamaha rid er . Greg Cernosek in second pl ace. In th e 85cc classes, racing was dominated by Rowdy Flanagan and James Mitchell. H e swep t the Open Pros, and edged Derek Brown and T im Buchl i for the 250cc Pro victory. Nothi ng changed unti l lap four, when Brown moved pas t Campbell for second. Mi tchell de mo ted Ca m p bell to fourth on lap seven, wh ile Buchli and Brown were taking their battle for the lead o u t of reach of th e rest. Cam pb ell cras hed later on tha t la p , and Newell went around Mi tchell for th ird, two circ ui ts later. Things sta bilized until lap 13 wh en Brown fin all y found a way past Buchli for th e lead. H e stayed th ere until lap 17, whe n Buchli regained th e spot and kept it for th e win. Newell finished a di stant th ird. In moto two , Buchli gated first aga in with Newell and Sandell in tow . Sandell crashed shortly after: This all owed Brown to tak e over third, and th e top three im media tely sta rted leaving th e pack. Newell took the lead on lap two, and never tra iled again. Bu t hi s ho p es for th e ove ra ll depended on Brown getting around Buchli. His wishes were grant ed o n lap six, and the top three ran in th at order to the checkers, eac h spaced abo ut five seconds apart. Newell 's 3I was enoug h to beat Brown 's 2-2 and Buchli's 1-3. The only hol esh ot Buchli mi ssed all da y was in the first 125cc Pro rnoto, Art DeHoH beat h im to tum one, but Buchli too k the lead soo n after. H e led every moment from there o n o u t, winn ing th e first ro und a nd leading all the way in moto two. Only Campbell cou ld stay close, finishing seco nd each time. Third overa ll went to Gil Murray, who finall y reached th at position in rnot o one by passing Scott Fulcher ' with two laps left. Corsetti cops Baylands Short Track , By Mike Vancil FREMONT , CA, MAY 27 , Mark Cor sett i rode a smooth and calcula ting race in th e Expert class to beat o ut 10 o ther rid ers at th e bi'weekly short track event at Baylands Ra cewa y Park. Corsetti could o nly manage a third in his six-rider heat race and did not get a good start positi on for the 11man final. Severa l restarts, from spills and fals e starts , del ayed th e race but thro ug ho ut it all Corsetti remained coo l aboard hi s Rotax , sponsored by Sho ei Helm ets, Dal e Robin son Engines, H og Wash and th e Cors etti Race T eam . Wh en th e gree n ligh t came o n it was quick starter Robert Bacosa on a H onda that grabbed th e lead. Eri c Larson , o n a H onda , had in curred two start penalties and had to start from th e exit of turn four. But hi s rise through the pa ck was ' swift and when th e checkers came out he wasstarting to work on secondpl acer Bacosa, Wh il e L arson wa s d ispla cing riders, Mark Corsetti was able to power under and around ear ly-leader Bacosa. , Early in th e race, Randy Bereman had hi s Rotax in conte ntio n but·as th e event progressed hi s grasp on the first three lessen ed and he finished fourth. The only double winner of the evening was young Johnny Murphree who pulled off wins in the 60cc and 80cc Novice/Junior classes. Because he was the only Junior entered, he was forced to start from th e second row in both his heats and both. the final s. It didn 't seem to concern him mu ch as he won all four races on a pair of Kawasaki s. The toughest battle came in the 80cc final wh en Murphree took more
