Strijbos has been battli ng with Frenchman jean-Michel Bayle throughout the series, but Bayle dropped out of the first moto with a seized engi ne , giving Strijbos a full 20 points. In th e first mota, in rainy condi tions which ca u sed a 30-m in u te delay, Strijbos took th e earl y lead but was passed by Ba yle o n la p two. Strijbos lost one more position when Ita ly's Corrado Maddii slid past Iqr seco nd p lace. H owever, o n th e ei g h t h la p , Bayle's mota came to an end 'when h is H onda si ezed and Maddii m otored by into the lead , while Strijb os foll owed in th ird. Maddii went on to become only th e third differen t rider to win a 125cc GP mota th is year.
