Ironically, Jack y Vimond was th e exception after a fall left him almost a lap down, but Yamaha teammate Kurt Ljungqvist lo st no time in demoting Jacky Martens ' from the lead early on th e seco nd lap with Mark Banks, Geboers, Thorpe, Kees Van der Yen , Cl audio De Carli, Nicoll, Ismo Vehkonen, Di rk Geukens and Leif Persson in hot pursuit. Nicoll h ad gated badly but made up many places on th e o uts ide o f turn one, whil e fellow Bri ton Andy Nicholls, secon d to Geboers in timed practice, went down on th e inside. Ni cholls rapidly fou ght back a lmos t into the points but went out with bent h andlebars af ter a crash o n h is own.. Honda GB tea mmate Banks was m trem endous for m , however, a~d he d~moted Marten s ~ la p after Ljungqvis t. Two laps from th e en d h e ·got very close to Ljungqvist before dropping back a~i n and seeing a last lap effort to dislodge th e Yamaha fa il. Nicoll, rated by onlooker G eorges J obe as th e fas test man on th e track, wa s ha ving his difficulties ge tt ing p ast Mart en s and he trailed th e KTM rider to the flag. " After th e ea rly laps vi sibility was su r pris ingly good except in the turns where th e loose soil wa s being thrown up, but I just " co u ldn' t find a way arou n d J ac ky. There is only one real line here." Geboers was using the loose soil to good effect. Not wishing to get too close to backm arker Rob Andrews, whose Kawasaki 's motor had "just cu t out" on lap .th ree, because of th e restricted visibility wh en raci n g into turns behind another rider , Geboers was seekin g th e lin e which would throw u p th e biggest screen o f dust for th e chasing Ljungqvist an d T horpe to ens u re th ey did not ge t to o n ear him. In the wake o f the leaders a trem endous struggle developed by h alf di st an ce involving Persson, Carli , J an Van PoppeI, Guekens, Liles a nd Lach er. T en se in hi s first GP ride o n a Honda , Per sson led th e group for a long time before h e made a few mistakes a n d lost his rh ythm to drop back to 10th a t th e flag a nd it was Li les a nd Lach er wh o made th e headw a y to pass him. Meanwhil e, Lacher had to rid e ha rd a fter losing co ntact with the gr o u p with a minor fall th e first time . he ca u gh t up to th e ba ck of th e sixma n trai n. Thorpe wa s running third again . and, as Carlqvist dropped qu ickly from fif th to seventh before his eve ntua l withdrawal , o n ly Ismo Vehkonen , a cra sh victim in moto ' o n e, h eaded Nicoll a n d Geboer s briefl y. . Vehkonen was soon a crash vict im · again a n d Nicoll held off an early cha lle nge from Ceboers to m ake up th e m ost grou nd ea rl y o n as he closed in o n th e three leaders who were h aving fun of th eir own . An sti e storm ed p ast Marten s o n th e thi rd lap, on ly to sta ll two laps la ter an d drop to sixt h as the two KTM s co ll i de d wh en Martens a ttacked hi s lead. That was th e signa l for Thorp e to go for it and again th e two leader s co llided, th is time with Marten s going down. . " Yo u h ave to be ha rd w hen yo u are fig hti ng for th e lead, " sai d Mart ens. " I was just u n lucky th at m y front wh eel was o n the polis he d surface in the tu rn w hen we touch ed. It co u ld just h ave easi ly bee n David who went down." With bent bars, Martens rejoined th e fra y in seventh pl a ce a nd was p assed by a h ard chargi n g Vim ond la ter o n. Van der Yen was elim ina ted with a damaged front br ak e di sc as he coll ided wi th Vehkonen wh en th e Finn tri ed to push his bike across 'th e track, and Ljungqvist pulled ou t a fter he had a bi g o ne try in g to p ass . a backmarker. Su rely the re wa s n o one to challen ge th e three ch ampionship leaders who n ow were also 1-2-3 in th e moto. But th at was to reckon without Liles an d Lach er who actu all y closed in o n th e b ig three but never got q u ite . close enou gh to demote them . In fron t of Liles and Lacher, G eboers was proving to be th e man of th e day. H e su rp rised Ni coll by raci ng up the inside as Ni coll p eered , th ro ugh th e murk thrown up in a long swee p in g turn by Thorpe's rear wheel. Then he made an outside pass on Thorpe which ga ve h im the inside line at the next corner. The two Hondas collided and Geboers got awa y first to secure the win. Thorpe was n ot on top form : " I' m lacking a little bit in confidence at th e moment. But I'm still leading the ch am p ionsh ip . I'll be back !" With th ree laps to go he wa s a lso pass ed by Ni coll and th e Kaw asaki man started to pull back Geboers but time ra n o ut for th e Englishman to sto p • the Belgi an 's succe ss. . Wh atley piloted hi sSuzuki to a 3I tally for seco nd o verall , while Smith a nd his Su zuki went 2-5 for th ird. The ra in sta rt ing pouring down just prior to th e start of th e rnoto, m akin g. the co urse a muddy mess. When th e gate dr opped , Brit Rob H err ing blasted into th e lead but co u ld on ly h old his position for a few tu rns before crashing in th e mud wh en Van den Berk m ade his move for the lead. H erring recovered but was never in top co n ten tion sayin g he couldn't get h is rhythm back togeth er. H e eventua lly crashed two m ore times a n d didn 't ge t a ny p oi nts in th e m o to. Van den Berk quickl y worked hi s way into a com fortab le lead, while Sm ith cru ised alo ne in seco n d place. Back in third , Whatley was fendin g off th e .h ard charges of Cagiva's Pek ka Vehkonen . But on lap four, Wh a tley bailed givi n g Vehkon en so le co nt ro l o f t hi r d . Whatley remou n ted in fifth ad mist a freighttr ain battle o ver third between Vehkonen , Ro land Diepold, Gert J an van Doorn, H einz Kin ig adner an d Mi ch ele Fanton. At the 30-m in ute mark, Vehkonen dropped o u t of contentio n when he went off th e track , an d Kinigadner ra n o ut of coola nt in his radiators. With Vehkonen and Kinigadner out o f th e running, Whatley wa s left a lon e in third place as he crossed the finish line behind Smith and winner Van den Berk. Van Doorn finished fourth ah ead of Diepold. Whatley blasted his Suzuki into th e lead at th e start of the second moto with a huge pile-up taking pl ace right beh ind h im in the first turn , which caugh t the li kes of H erring and Brit Mark Bennett. Whatley sta yed clean of th e big crash but Am erican Ricky Ryan slid by Whatley for the lead, but Whatley immediately got him back.
