Box 498, Lo ng Beach, CA 90801·0498 44 _ Raff Pansch of the AM A 's government relations department had a very interestering conversation w ith Robert Terry, Assemblyman Richard Floyd's legislative assistant, last week. Floyd, as you probably know, is the sponsor of AB36, the California mandatory helmet law, and it was Floyd who used abusive language in several conversations with comedian Jay Leno. Pansch asked Terry how far Floyd was willing to go to get the governor to sign AB36 into law. Terry said, "We don't have to do much more. We have no reason to believe the governor will veto the bill just because he gets letters from the Hells Angels and the thousand of them ride around the state capitol. That's not going to persuade the governor to veto the bill. The AMA can send their suit and tie guys out here to meet with the governor, but I don't think that's going to persuade him either." Terry then asked Pansch why he thought there was a chance the governor would veto the bill and Pansch replied, " Pub lie sentiment." To which Terry said , "Publ ic sentiment? On whose part? The Hells Angels? The AMA? " The conversation ended with Terry laughing. gia's Mike Smith (Hon) topped Doug Polen (Suz) and Stephen Matthews (Hon) in the Suzuki Cup Middleweight Supersport class.
