The longest winning streak came in 1980 wh en Alan " Cra zy" Christian took th e Scratch main th e first 13 weeks of the season. Schwartz pulled the pole for his Budwei ser/CTI Br ace/To ys for Pops/STP/Cirello Weslake and put th e power to the ground and was the first rider to reach turn one. Steve Lucero tried to go to the outside but Schwartz came wide off turn two and Lucero ended up in the wall and was out with a bent right footpeg. Christian and Shawn McConnell stayed glued to Schwartz's rear tir e through the first lap. McConnell momentarily parked in turn one on the second lap and dropped off the pace for a third-place finish. . Christian never gave Schwartz an inch of breathing room as the two riders circled the track in tight formation over the final three laps with Schwartz having enough to take the win. Bill y Hamill took the lead from the 30-yard line on the first lap of the Handicap main. Trinon Cirello started alone on the 20 and he led the pack into the first bend but Hamill and his Speedway USA/ Mister T-ShirtiSTP/ Quaker State/ Mom &: Dad Weslake attacked Cirello and by the time they came off tum two Hamill was the leader of the pack. Nicol, riding the Widowmaker/ Ascot Weslake, came into the eightlap main undefeated in Handicap racing on the night. The early going in the ma in saw Billy Gray set a blistering pace on Mik e Bloom's twin-cam Jawa. Nicol chased down Gray and passed him for the point position o n lap two. Shawn McConnell , who had to lay it down for Trinon Cirello on th e original start, was attacking th e field and winding hi s way towards th e front of th e pack, even tually honing in o n Nicol. It looked to be only a matter of time before McConnell over took Nicol but on th e fourth lap he acci den tally pulled ou t his .kill switch . By th e tim e he put it back in he had dropped to th e ba ck. Billy Hamill was flying a n d whittled away at Nicol's advan tage, and wh en th ey took th e white flag he was on Nicol's rear tire . Hamill stuck his front tire inside Nicol as the y came off turn four and it was a drag race to the line. They crossed under th e ch ec kered side-by-side with Nicol having a sm all advantage. Third spot went to Andy Northrup with McConnell coming all th e way back to fourth. Bobby Schwartz co ntin ued his domination of the circuit by sweeping the Scratch side of the program.
