Ward slid o ut in one of the many ruts o n the cou rse and dropped back to seventh after Lechien, Andrews a nd Lei sk went by. A serio us pileup occu rr ed after th e uphill triple jump. Corey Cope, Lance Eubank, Chri s Knox a nd Mike Hamden crossed lines, and Harnden was KO 'ed o n th e track. Du e to a possible head inju ry, he was not immediatel y moved , and th e race went o n as riders jumped past th e yellow-flag area. H amden was transpo rted to the West Virgi nia Universit y H ospit al in nearby Morgantown, and was reported to be o kay. At th e' 20-mi n u te mark, J ohnson was holding a nine-second lead over Stanton, Gl over a nd Lechien . Leisk kep t working for it and finally passed Andrew s for fifth. Then Lechien lit his own a fte r b urne rs and ca me around Glover on a n outside line in a fast sweeper. From there he set up a p ass in th e next downhi ll turn. A lap later Lechien tri ed th e same move on Stanton, but Stanton closed th e door a nd fought ba ck to seco nd in the next turn. " That was a heck o f a line Lechien had ," sai d Stanton. " It was long and on th e o utside, a nd you have to have a lot of ba lls to use it. I kn ew that if I got back arou nd I co uld keep it together." J oh nson wo n, a nd Stan to n did hold it together, putting a gap on Lechien a t th e finish. Gl o ver a nd Leisk wer e 4-5. Ward , Yam a ha supported ' Doug Dubach , O 'M ara and Andrews co m p leted th e top 10. "I have to give a lot o f credit LO my me ch anic, Bri an Lunniss, for this one, " said J ohnson. " He built m y bike befor e I got up here, a nd when I didn't like it he tore it down to the frame a nd sta rte d o ver. It 's gr eat to put together two good mOlOS for such great down-home MX fans that's who I like to race for." 125cc Eastern Reg io n l25cc Supercross Champion Todd DeH oop put his Suzuki in fro nt o f Co oper a n d H olland at the sta rt of rnoto one. Befor e the field got away Jim Jones and David An tonucci went down, and it wasn 't long before Keh oe also got in trouble. " I went down with some guy early in th e first lap," said Keh oe , " a nd it really tore up my front wh eel. A bunch of spokes were hi story." Cooper and Holland put a bead o n DeHoop and wer e a round q uic k ly. Yamah a rid er Mike LaRocco, Suzuki 's Donnie Schmit, a n d Ka wasaki /Pro -Circuit rider Larry Brook s were sorti ng o ut in 45-6. Suzuki 's Ronnie Tich en or and Pro-Am r ider J immy Ch ester were 78. Tuf R a cing 's Keith Bowen wheeled his Kawasaki from II th to ninth in o ne move by Stacey Cook and Ro bert Hayes into th e downhill right-hand turn. Cooper wound up his Honda and was the fir st 125 to clear the triple. Holland didn't make the sa me move, but closed in to take the lead near th e finish-line turn. Tichenor was making up time pa ssing Brooks, Schmit, La Rocc o and finall y DeHoop for third. Chester fell off the pace, and Bowen inheri ted eigh th. H olland a nd Cooper never left . sigh t o f eac h o ther to th e finish. It was so close that H olland a lmost shot through the tir es on th e fin al tu rn , holding it o n th e edge in for th e win. Tichen or , 16 seco nds back, was third, and Schmit wor e down Del-loop for fourth. LaRocco took si x t h , followed b y Bro oks a n d Bowen . " I saved m yself the first two lap s because it was reall y wet and I was wait ing for the track to dr y ou t," sa id Holland, who spe nt most of th e previous week figh ting an ear infection. The Oklahoma native led DeH oop, Holland, Tich en or, Carlo Coen, Schmit, Brooks LaRocco a nd Keh oe. H olland, Tich enor and th en Schmidt moved past DeHoop, and then Ty Guy Cooper grabbed his second 125cc w in of the series with a 2 -1 score. He moved to fifth in the point standings after missing two rounds. Ron Lechien (4) passed Broc Glover in the second 250cc moto to take third and finish second overall. Glover ended up sixth overall . Davis routed his Suzuki.. up 'into th e battle for sixth. Kehoe, away with a clean star t a nd an operable bike, rode hard and clean to get a ro u nd Davi s, and th en past Schmit, H e soon was locked in with Tichenor, then ska ted around to work on H olland. Co oper 'e w i fe a n d m echani c, J ayn i, was giving the cha lk board signa ls. " All you got, 4 laps to go, " was the signa l that Cooper needed to turn u p the wick. H olland had been closing, but Keh oe came on a nd passed for second, using a wide-open o u tside line on th e top straigh taway. H olland maintained th ird, T ich enor fourth , a nd Davi s, DeH oop a nd Bro ok s came around o n th e sa me line. T hen Sch m it coas ted off th e cou rse a nd towards the p its late in the race aft er ca tch ing his foot in a rut. The pain wa s too grea t to con tin ue, " I'd been here a l) week a nd it was reall y co ld," sa id Cooper , a fte r lockin g up his second National win o f th e season. " I was read y to get ou t th e ra in tire s, and the n we ge t a ll this su n. All I ca n say is yo u have to be on a H onda to ge t out fro nt, ri ght, Ricky?" " T hird overa ll was grea t," said Tich enor, " b u t now I have to get home and study for fin als.
