SALLUZO Sales Mana/?er Spectre Oils of Amenca Brookfield, CT Lasting impression T he bea u ty o'f h avin g a bad memory (like mine) is that most of o ur dai ly lives aren 't worth remembering anyway, bu t the one thi ng th at tho usands will remember Ted Boody for didn 't tak e pl ace a ta race track or on T V or o n Roxy Rockwood's sh ow or in a Cycle New s mterview . Ted left a lasting impression on the school kid s we talked to about mo torcycle safety! Most of the school kids he spoke to never ca me to a race, proba bly never will, bu t odds are they will throw a leg over a mo torcycle in their life time and there's no doubt in my mi nd they will remember seei ng o n film we showed Ted crash so hard at T erre H au te that it became a symbol of th e "agony of defeat " for ABC-TV and a lastin g rem inder that hi s helmet saved hi s life and one mi ght also save th eir's one day . T ed li ked talking with th e kids a nd exp laini ng how he cared for his eq ui pment, and how he buil t hi s racer to be safer. T ed worked on his approach to the su bjec t of sa fety . a nd hi s public speaki ng and con fidence imp roved with every sch ool visit. Ted wasn't th a t much older th an some of them in those days, and they rea lly listened. Kids in th e a udie nce in near ly every school wo uld raise the ir ha nds when he asked, " Has anyone ' here toda y been inj ured ridi ng a motorcycle?" H e would the n drive home the point of how the purchase and use of sa fety equipment like hel mets, leathers, boo ts a nd gloves was a lot chea pe r tha n just o ne ambu lance rid e and less painfu l a nd less ern barrasing than the cast a nd cr utches they would need for weeks. Of those school visi ts, o ne th at I remember most was a unique experien ce for both of us. Up to that remem orab le vis i t, m ost o f th e groups T ed spo ke to co nsisted of 300 to 400 school kids at a time. Bur o n this da y T ed spoke to 800 kids in j ust o ne school near Kal a mazoo, . Mich iga n. H e was rea lly nervous for tha t one, bu t it was hi s best tal k ever! It is going to be ha rd, rea l hard, to th ink about raci ng and no t think good things abou t Ted and wonder where he wo uld have fin ish ed as th e results of future Na tio nals a nd loca l races a re written u p in Cycle N ews . "Mt. St. H elen s, WA If we can, so can you! Ted Boody is gone. Tha t we can not change. What we can do is mak e a diffe rence for Ted Bood y's fam ily. Ted knew the dan gers of the sport and so di d his fa m ily. H e chose what he wanted to do and all of us were just a li ttl e better off beca use he did. Now it's o ur tu rn ! I challen ge each and every firm in the motorcycle a nd related industri es to match o ur check of $50 to th e T ed Boody Fu nd. There are well over 4000 of us in th e U.S . If only half meet this cha lle nge the S100,000 will make a difference. Don't be grumbling a bo u t " busi ness bein g bad " and " it' s not u p to me." If you wo rk in a shop or parts department a nd you read th is, circle it and leave it on th e desk of your boss . We need to meet th is challenge. We need to prove we can ta ke care of o ur ow n.
