'L>'7'LIYil mlr:'0 ...:.u..:..r...:.t.:J...£j ~ , E• I S "WT 4 Dear Senator Wilson: This letter is in response to Senator Cranston's S7 Wilderness bill. I am opposed to this bill and hope you take' the time and effort to fully exam ine its impact. I work hard during th e week as a sales representative for a co mpan y in the animal health field and my leisure activity 'is very important to me. My chosen leisure activity is offroad recreation vehicles and those areas which have been designated for that purpose. This bill would limit access to those areas. California is a wonderful place with many people, with many interests, To coexist there , must be a compromise to accommodate thes e varied people and their interests. The Sierra Club, Senator Cranston, and the S7 bill do not co mp rom ise and exclude many people whose interests lie elsewhere. Unfortunately, most off-roaders are of an individualistic nature and until now have tend ed not to be organized en masse. We are real izing that in order to keep our interests alive we need to organize and become politically activ e. I bel ieve you ar e seeing so me sigris of th at , and what you are seeing is just th e beginning of a very active interest gr oup. We are encouraging everyone to register to vote and to tak e an active role to elect and support those candidates who support the interests of all th e people and not of th e select few. This brings us to you, Senator Wil son. Where do you stand on S7? You have not taken a sta nd on this issue. I saw a recent T V com mercial for your reelection saying that you take a tough stand on drugs. Tough sta n d ? Who wants dru g a b u se? Nobody. Take astandt Take a stand on an issue that isof concern to many Californians. We know what Senator Cranston thinks. We need a person who represents everyone. A person who can say rio to th e Sierra Club and . to Senator Cranston, and (a person wh o can say) th at S7 does not provide for th e needs of California and its residents. JOE SLAUGHTER Santa Maria, CA As you've no doubt seen elsewhere in this issue, Sen . Wilson has taken a stand - for S7! Follow up the above letter with another missive to Wilson 'and get every motorcyclist you know to do th e sam e . . . Editor. - ~ Ba'seball and bullet bike s I was depressed when i read your co m men ts co ncerning NBC-TV's coverage of the Laguna Seca 500cc GP. I was depressed because the local NBC affiliate advertised the coverage and then decided to air a Philadelphia Phillies baseball game instead. Of course I'd planned my whole day around watch ing the race and when it didn't come on I panicked and ended up reprogramming my TV and VCR in a futil e attempt to catch th e race. What reall y irked me was th e game was also on another chan nel and two addition al baseball games were on other cha nnels I The wh ole in cid ent just rea ffirm s my hatred of baseball. On another matter, West 57th Street (telecast on April 30) carried a story about " Bu llet Bikes" and " Can yo n Racing" in California. Now I'm all for more power and better handling but wh en John Q. Public sees what young kids ar e doing with this technology (acting like ch ildren and killing themselves) he is going to support legislation th at will restrict it. Why don't the manufacturers wise up and do a little preventive regulation of their own? After all, it's obvious the parents of th es e pseudo-racers don't ca re. Remember the three wh eelers? Cheers to ESPNJor their coverage of the Laguna Seca 250cc GP. BOB RYAN Forty Fort; PA The West 57th Street show was a repeat of a show that was first telecast last year . . . Editor. ' Fishing and kid's stories ' I wasn't able to attend th e Laguna Seca GP, but 1 thought at least I'd be able to view the del ayed telecast on o ur local NBC-TV affiliate in Minneapolis, KARE 11. Can you imagine my surprise when in lieu . of the first motorcycle road race Grand Prix held in the U.S. in over 20 year s, KARE- 11 telecast Champi onship Fishing and The Story Teller (a children's show)? Don't get me wrong, fishing is a great sport and kid s are fine (as long as th ey aresom eon e else 's). KARE II said the y were bound by con trac t to air those programs and that the y had no plans to telecast th e race in th e near future. Every KARE 11 newscast I see wh ere they mention an accident involving a motorcycle makes me wonder. Why do they so readily report the negative and conv eniently ignore th e positive? In addi tion , I ca lle d CNN in Atlanta o n the night of April 10, asking why they didn't report the results of the Laguna Seca GP, and th e sports desk said, " Nobod y cares abou t motorcycle racing." B.S.!' BILLCORNOG Minneapolis, MN Boody Trust Fund On Saturday, May 7, the racing fraternity lost a very special person, Ted Boody, in a tragic accident at the Ascot National Half Mile . Being an avid dirt track racing fan and a • Michigander, I've followed Ted's career from amateur to professional sta tus. Ted will be sorely missed by all who knew him. The purpose of this letter is to get a donation fund started immediately. What if every motorcycle dealer, accessory dealer, manufacturer and , m ember of the racing fraternity started a fund raising drive to help this cause? Or what if every fan of Class C racing or racing in general donated what they could afford? In th e 23 years I've been going to th e races I've met a lot of super people, had some excellent times, a nd seen som e of th e best racing in th e world. Let 's show our appreciatio n for Ted Boody, the future Ted Bood ys, and the curre nt Jay Springsteens, Scott Parkers, Bubba Sh oberts , Ricky Grahams, Chris Carrs, Steve Moreheads, Ronnie J ones's, Donations should be send to the Boody Trust Fund, Account #0152603, Security National Bank, P.O . Bo x 1290, Sapulpa, OK 74067. All funds received w ill go to Ted's wife and daughters . . . Editor . Support cl ubs I'd like to p ub licly ' thank the Merced Dirt Riders for the excellent enduro th ey sponsored on May 15 at Twain Harte, California. From the sign- up , course layout, ' speed averages , check operation and all other aspects, this event was a model that o ther clubs sh ould emulate. ' The Merced club is famous for making their enduro appeal to not only the AA riders but the beginners as well. By carefu lly balancing the speed averages , trail difficulty, free times and resets, the y are able to let th e best riders show th eir stu ff while not making th e run a hare scrambles for the C riders. Their trails are well ma intained, and the check crews are very well in structed. The club is truly interested in making the event a fun ride for all riders, and the y have acco mp lished th is with their hard work , dedicat ion and true understanding of th e subtleties of high quality enduros. , Th has been a very difficult year is for enduros in northern California. We have alread y lost one event for sure and are currently in jeopardy of lo sing four others du e primarily to land use issues. Since our clubs are under intense pressure just fighting for the privilege to run their events, I'd like to urge my fellow riders to support and encourage the clubs at every event. I know that after . a tough enduro, it 's difficult to think abou t anything but getting home, but I know from personal experience when I work end uros th at riders' . compliments (and even reasonable ,constructive criticism) go a long way. Please tell the clubs how much you appreciate their efforts. Join a club so that we can continue to enjoy one of the .last truly great challenges riding and comp leting enduros. Thanks again, Merced Dirt Riders, and all of your non-club members who helped make the Little Polecat , a first class event. SCOTr TAGGART Pine Grove, CA On ly in Japan I would like to know more about , what looked like a street legal Honda XR600 with a Knight frame, like Bubba .Shobert rides, that I saw on a cabl e TV network's coverage-of a trade show in Japan. Do they sell them there and is Bubba a big thing there? BARRY BRAND Baytown, TX Th ere are more than a few singlecylin der " racer replica " street bikes available inLapan that aren't marketed here. Japanese motorcycle publications like Cycle World , which bills itself as being the "Journal for th e tasty rider," regularly featur e word and photo spreads on American dirt track racing, so Bubba . probably is a " big thing" in Japan . . .
