Iever wa s pointed to wards ' the ground, and with the exha ust p ipe on the other side, th e lever would be the first thing to touch do wn. Mick's first ride confirmed this. Moving the lever up on the splined shaft also caused problems because it would then catch on th e outer clutch cover, sometimes not return ing to its original position. With Drew muttering something about us thinking we were factory riders or some such nonsense, we .' came to the conclusion that filing off the inside edge of the lever would allow it to be positioned high enough not to be dangerous, but also low enough not to catch on the cases. This done, it still dragged in down hill turn five, but never enough to change gears. Mick suffered through his first few laps, starting out aro und th e two minute mark, th en working his way through the :50s to the high :40s.
