Craig doubles at Sarona MX By Ken Faught 42 RAMONA, CA, MAY I Yamaha-mounted Michael Ray Craig captured the win in a knock down, drag out 250cc Pro class match and also netted the 125cc Pro victory in the third round of the CMCI Dodge Trucks Spring MX Classic at Barona Oaks. When the gate dropped at the start of the first 250cc Pro moto Ron Turner holeshot Craig, Shawn Wynne, Brett Redman and Darin Hoeft. On the first lap Redman endoed in the whoops, but quickly got up in ninth. Craig started to pressure Turner for the lead, but the veteran motocrosser wouldn 't give an inch. After three laps of battling with Turner Craig fmally moved into first and immediately put distance on the pack. But on the fourth lap Craig crashed hard off a set of doubles, surrendering his lead to Turner and dropping back to a distant fourth. While Craig and Turner were swapping the lead Cagiva-rnounted Willie Surratt had worked his way by Hoeft and pressured Wynne. Wynne picked up his pace and the pair soon caught Turner, creating a three-way battle for the lead. Surratt continued to stalk Wynne and at the halfway point moved into second. As Surratt looked for a way by Turner, Craig had made up the eight-second defici t and closed in o n the leaders a fte r passing Wynne. Turner struggled to hold on to th e lead as Surratt and, Craig continua lly pushed harder. As the three riders ente red a set of whoops, both Surratt a nd Craig edged up along Turner, who slam med into th e th ird wh oop a nd went over the bar s. T urne r's mi scue allowed Surratt to momentarily take over the lead until Craig stu ffed him in th e foll owing turn. Turner managed to get up in third, almost 10 seconds behind. Surratt continued to chase Craig down to th e wire , but at th e finish Craig took a well-earned victory over Surratt, Turner, Wynne and Redman. Surratt's hopes of capturing the second moto win and overall ended when the second motos were cancelled due to an ambulance shortage and the first moto results stood as the overall finishes. In the 125cc Pro class Craig came back to holeshot Redman, Surratt, J. Blood and Joe Merrihew. Craig wasted no time and quickly built up a comfortable five-second lead over the pack. As Craig was pulling away, Surratt moved in behind Redman and made his bid for second. Surratt soon found his way by Redman in a nasty set of downhill whoops, but Redman retaliated by stuffing.Surratt in the following berm to retake second. A few turns later Surratt did the same thing to Redman and took charge of the position. By this time Craig had opened up a 15-second lead and was still going strong. The fierce battle for second ended as Surratt pulled to the side of the track. As Surratt kept looking down at the motor his mechanic rushed to his side , then in a matter of seconds he was back on the track in fourth. Apparently Surratt's leg had shut off the fuel petcock. At the checkers Craig took an easy win over Redman, as Surratt stole third away from Merrihew. Results 125 PRO: 1. Mi chael Craig (Yam); 2. Brett Redman (Kaw); 3. Willie Surr att (Cog); 4. By Len Breech HANOVER, PA, APR. 30 Veteran Camel Pro competitor Randy T exter topped the 750 and 600cc Expert finals for the second 'stra igh t event at Trail-Way Speedway. Texter won the 750cc Expert . class by a straight over Jim Hollister after Tom Cerciello blew up about halfway after keeping Texter within .\0 yards. . With several of the top competitors in Ohio, youngster Georgie Price chased Texter in the 600cc Expert class as they quickly put several yards on the intense battle between Kenny . Mohl er , Dave Duhaine and Eric George. By th e third ' lap Mohler drifted back and was replaced by Tom CercieIlo as th e battle heated up. After switch ing position s several tim es Cerciello took con tro l of third as th ey began the final lap. At the en d, T ext er had a 15-yard margin over Pri ce, wh o was 20 yards in front of Cerciello. Cerciello came back and took the 250cc Expert final , grabbing the lead from T exter, Woods, Mike Klopp and Price at th e start. While Cerciello was pulling away to a 30-yard margin, T exter and Woods were battling over second, with Price moving in and taking third about halfway. Price th en displaced Texter for second on th e sevent h lap. Ken Yoder quickl y jumped in front of Mik e Walton, Chuck Wrecsics and Ri ch Mellinger in th e 250cc Amateur clas s. Walton fell on the second lap, giving second to - Wrecsics. Whil e Wrecsics easily took second, Yoder won by half a straightaway. The normally calm 55cc class had one of their .best races in some time. After falling in the heat John Winsett got off to a slow start in the final behind Dan Halligan, Paul Lynch and Josh Young. Once he got roIling Winsett gradually started picking off places and took second at the beginning of the third lap, then took the _ lead at the beginning of the next lap and took the win. Bein!? on the penalty line didn't stop Wmsett's cousin, Ricky, in th e 85cc class as he quickly caine out in second behind the only Expert in the . field, Randy Shank, and in front of fellow penalty line starter Robert Miller. As they came off the fourth turn on the second lap, Ricky Winsett took over first while Miller went into second as .they went down the back straight on the following lap. While the order was set, it was stiIl very tight for the remainder of the ra ce. Jeff Isola surprised many by taking the lead at the start of the 200cc Amateur race from Paul Southard and Kevin Varnes. As they completed the first lap, Varnes shot into the lead and never looked back. Southard took second on the third lap. Darryl Baer's shot at beating his brother in the 600cc Amateur final was short-lived as brother Dallas took the lead from him as they hit the third turn on the opening lap and went on to win uncontested. That wasn't the story in the battle
