Francy TORONTO, OH, APR. 23-24 American riders may have dominated th e Can-Am Vintage Trial s held near Toronto, but a handful of Canadian rid ers shined in the Vintage cla sses. The two day event, which was sponso red by the Ohio Va lley BSA Owners Club, drew riders from as far away as Missouri to compete in the trial which was a part of the Eastern Vintage Trials Championship Series. "We may have been outnumbered, but not outridden," said Canadian rider/organizer Dave Gibson in explaining his team's performance. The standout rider of the Canadian team was Robert Allerellie, who rode a meticulously prepared BSA 441 to victory in the Vintage Lightweight Expert class. Gibson put th e icing on the cake in backing up teammate Bob Smith with a second place in the Vintage Heavyweight class. Smith was riding a 500cc " G ru m p h " (T ri u m p h engined Greeves) whi le Gibson contested the event - with his AJS model 18CS. American David Leavitt tied Smith for first in the class with his Dick Mann-built Gold Star BSA. The trial featured I I demanding sections laid out over the rugged terrain of eastern Ohio. Each section was designed with three routes through the section. The routes took into account the skills and capabilities of both rider and machine w ith the hardest routes being for " modern " vintage bikes a nd least difficult ro utes being for riders of rigid fra med models. Prior to starting the event the 47 riders , who were on mo torcycles ranging from a 1939 BSA to a 1976 Montessa, were introduced to several of the motorcycli ng personalities in attendance, including long-time Cycle News .co nt ributor Lee Cowie, Sta n jakubaszek, organizer of the Eastern Vintage Trials Champion- ~~~ .....
