"We're still fighting and the next round is in the Senate Transportation Comm ittee on May 17," said Katz. "The vote on AB10 w ill be very close." First, he's off to Europe where the Rallye de Atlas begins with a special test in Bezier, France, then after the bikes and competitors are transported by boat over to Tangiers, Morocco, the Rallye continues for eigh t more da ys, covering a 2500 mile course before finishing in Marrakesh. Harden ' will ride a KTM 600 courtesy of the French KTM importer in the Rallye de Atla s. He'll then ride an Acerbis /Camel Ch all eng esponsored KTM 600 in the In cas Rally in Peru. Majesky has been appointed sales manager/ nationa l accounts for YuasaExide, the largest producer and distributor of motorcycle batteries in the U.S. In addition, Penny L Guido has joined the Reading, Pennsylvania-based corporation as marketing manager. Guido will be responsible for producing and implementing all sales support materials, sales and marketing programs, national advertising, and trade exhibitions. . Several major changes ha ve occured at ,KT M, bo th in Austria and here in Am erica. KTM Austria h as changed from a p rivately owned company to a pub lic corporation. Nevertheless, 100% of the shares are fully owned by Eric T runkenpolz. According to KTM , " New fina ncial strength gained from this move is . ' being used to increase management Personnel' in the Austrian parent company." KT M says the additional management is a direct result of "unprecede nted grow th" in , all divisions of KTM Austria . The mo to rc ycle division has been expanded with the a ddition of KTM's first four-stroke, the Enduro LC4, and other four-stroke mo torcycles will be added to the line in the future. KTM bicycle sales are up 60%, and demand for KTM-produced radiators has increased 190%over the previous year. Rod Bush, previously national sales manager, has been promoted to president and general manager of KTM America, In c. Bryon Farnsworth has been added to the California staff in the position of public relations manager. Operations in the U.S. remain basically the same a lthough parts warehousing an d sh ip ping have been consolidated into the Lorain, Oh io, office. If you're in the area of Mt. Fran Crane, 41, of .Sa n ta Cruz, California, and ,Michael Kneebone, 29, of Chicago, Ill in ois, will set out on May 31 in an attempt to establish a solo motorcycle record for riding to America 's 48 contiguous states . Cra ne, who will ride a BMW KlOO, and Kneebone, who will ride a Yamaha Venture, plan to average 1200 miles per day and complete their 8000-mile journey in seven days . They'll start in Pendleton, Oregon, and end the ride in Brattleboro, Vermont. A press re lease from Mike Goodw in 's Supercross, Inc. says the promotion firm has appl ied to southern California's Anaheim Stadium for a supercross date for 1989, and also plans supercross events at At lanta, Georgia's Fulton County Stadium and at San Jose, California's Spartan Stadium next year. The Templin Highway Off-Road Riding Area, located in the Angel es Na tional Forest near Castaic Lake, California , will o ffic ia ll y close within the next couple of weeks, according to Forest Service District Ra nger Mike Wickman. The closure is the result of a new forest p lan, which outlines forest use in the area for the next 1O- IS years. On Sunday, May I, the Valley -Observed T rials Enthusiasts coll ected ISoo pounds of tras h at Templin H igh way in an effort to keep the area open , but accordi ng to Wickmall the only way to head off the closure is to use the la nd management process to seek an amendment to the forest p lan. Expert dirt tracker Sammy Sweet, a spectator at the May 7 Ascot Half Mile, announced in Gardena that he will be a spectator from now on . Formerly of Porter, Texas, Sweet recently moved to Garden Grove, California" and accepted a position with ARB Pipeline Inc. "I decided to quit (racing) at the end of last year after I got hurt 10 much," said Sweet. "I didn't get to see my son much, so I decided to take a different path. According to Chris Huth ' of Willow Springs, the WE RA Grand National Finals are scheduled for November 3-6, so there was no reason to run additional qualifiers.
