Time Trials It was crowd-favorite Springsteen who clocked in with the fastest time , a 22.234-second circuit which 'was almost a second off two-time National Champion Ricky Graham's record time of 21.419, set in September, 1983. Filling out the heat race pole sitters were Carr, who clocked in with 22.249, Parker, who posted a 22.278, and Shobert, who turned the timers at 22.330. The top 10 was rounded out by Graham (22.393), Iowa's Rich King (22.436 ), Poovey (22.4 42), Tim Mertens of Illinois (22.462), D&S Racing's Pete Hames (22.503), and Graham's Lawwill Racing teammate, Steve Morehead (22.541). Heats Hames led Springsteen and Boody into turn one at the start of the first 1O-lap Expert heat race, which . directly transferred the top three finishers to the main event. Springer took the lead from Hames goin~ . into turn three, but Hames took It back with an on-thegas pass out of turn two at the start of lap two. Hames led the following five laps while Springsteen and Boody continually swapped second. Coming out of turn two on lap seven, Springsteen passed Hames on the outside and Boody powered underneath Hames' Honda to drop the D&S Racing rider to third place. Springer held Boody at bay to win the heat, and Hames took the last transfer spot ahead of Michigan's Brian Atherton and California 's Mike Inderbitzin. Carr worked his way from fourth at the green light to first at the checkered flag to win the second Expert heat race, the fastest heat of • the night (three minutes, 45.823 seconds). Harley-mounted Scott Pearson grabbed the holes hot at the start of the race , followed by Morehead, Poovey and H-D Motor Co.!Shoeil Hap Jones / R.S. TaichilTsubakisponsored Carr. By lap four Carr was in third place and he moved into second on lap five. The Team Harley rider took the lead from Poovey on lap seven and held it to the finish, ' although Poovey hounded him the rest of the way and almost pulled even with Carr at the finish line. By the checkers, Califonia's Don Howard had moved into third to take the last transfer spot, Pearson and Morehead had to settle for fourth and fifth, respectivel y, which earned them trips to the first semi . . In heat ·three, H-D Motor Co.! Bell /Harl ey Owners Groupl Tsubaki-backed Parker did exactly what Carr had done in the previous heat - he worked his way from fourth place at the start to finish first at the flag. Jones nabbed the holeshot, followed by Day and King , while Parker p u lled a time-consuming wheelie off the line. For the first five laps Jones and Day traded the top spot while . Par ker ho unded King; slowly the two -rider battle for third edged toward the two-rider ba ttle for first. On lap six the contest became a fourrider fight for the point. Parker, using the high line, moved from fourth place to first p lace on lap seven, then moved down low on the pole to protect a lead he would hold until the finish. J ones slipped from second on lap eight to fourth at the flag and had to settle for a semi berth. Day took second and King finished third. 00 00 0") ....... .. 00 ....... Parker (11) leads f ifth-place finisher J ay Springsteen (9 ) and National champ Bubba Shobert. who took third. Terry Poovey (1 8) eventually got by Springsteen (9 ) t o bring his MarioneauxRacing Honda home in f ourth. Taichi/Kerker/Hondaline-sponsored Shobert was lead in g, Eklund was second and Graham was circulating in third. . Shobert never surrendered his lead, but he was hounded for the full 10 laps by Eklund, who finished second despite being pressured for a good portion of the race by Graham. Graham earned the last transfer spot, Chad Felicio finished fourth and Estep took fifth despite a dragging rear brake; in the final laps Estep's rear disc was glowing cherry red. Wood- Ro tax-moun ted Do n n ie Harrell won the evening's only sixlap Junior heat race. He was followed home by Bobb y McDowell, on a Honda; Todd Bridges, riding a Ro tax; Kevin Atherton, on a WoodRo tax; and Anthony Holdsclaw, aboard a Rotax. Semis Pearson got the holeshot in ' the first l O-Iap Expert semi, which transferred only the winner to the final, but it was Morehead who soon . took the lead and held it till the end. Morehead, riding a near-brakeless motorcycle, led every lap, sending second pl ace Pearson and the rest of the field to the last chance qualifier. "I had to pump the brakes about five times to get 'em up, get 'em going," Morehead said. The second semi went to Jones, who got the holeshot and simply powered away.
