That I wen t awa y to a far distant . Faire, and m y tim e in its past I'll never undo. By m yself one early m orn , th e air aliv e w ith a su m m er coming, I wh eeled m y m otorcycl e from its place and rode off under ' t he br ight en in g s ky. N o fa vorite highwa ys this time - in stead, unridden backroads, past unfamiliar towns, ov er remo te h ills, do wn among a v irgin valley's new-leafed woods. There I stopped to stretch, the breeze soothzng beneath a whopping oak tree. It was serene and splendid. And in a fleet moment I was aloft on the wings of sweet slumber, gliding to an age ago to a revelry of herdsmen and merry milkmaids, good squires and their dam es, the grand lord and lady. Elizabethan it was, four centuries back, all set in a play 'Shakespeare might have written. Actors cavorted on an open stage; a hearty scent of foods sated the air. In my full suit of leathers I felt nearly a part of them, an d joined a round dance that was jovial and profane. " Y o u wear wondrous fine rainment!" a lass laughed h igh in her bosom. " Well met, m y lad! " boomed a big wh isk ered g ent, passing me a tankard spilling over with ale. The day reeled and sang on through that ribald whirl, ' til eventide ap p roach ed the bo isterous glen. Then , from behind a gaming tent, I rolled out my bike like a R en aissan ce rogue's promethean moun t. But this was no horse, so plain to see. What everyone saw was all metal and wheels, gleaming paint and eni~ma. And when I straddled it and lit off its big motor, the w ild bark of exhaust brought forth a great gasp. " By gar! S'urounds!" came the shouts and cries. I rapped the throttle and their awe turned to cheers. "We shall see thee anon!" blared the big [ella through his beard. And away I flew, away from that past , back to th e valley and my place under the tre e. A h and was shaking my sho u lder - another rider had stopped, wondering if I was OK. His face was near covered w ith hair, and something in his eyes was centuries old. And wh en he offered me a drink, it was from ihat sam e tankard again . And I kn ew that m y ride was now never ending. A nd tha t the Faire was forever, and for ever. 00 00 0'> ....-4 William Edgar ~------------------------------------------~------------------- • ~--, • SUBSCRIPTION ORDER FORM • =-- Name _-:;;;-;:-;:-;-;;=;-;:;-;-:;;;-;;; _ (PLE A S E PRI NT C LE A R L Y !
