Graves, Hart top Washougal MX By Brian Barnes WASHO UGAL, WA, AP R . 17 O regon 's Tony Graves ca me away with a n impressive win in the 'l25cc' P ro ra nks, while another O regonian , G ra yso n Ha rt , bested Yamaha's Scott T yler and G ra ves in the 250cc Pro class today duri ng th e o peni ng round of the 1988 CMC Gold Star Series , held at Was hougal Motocross Park. Nearly 300 riders showed u p for th e event. With track conditions bordering on pe rfect a nd skies overcast, racing go t underw ay with the first I 25cc P ro mo to. G ra ves, fresh o ff h is seco nd pl ace ride at t he Kin gd o m e Mi ckey T ho mpso n race the previous week, rose to th e occassio n by taking his Hon d a to w i ns in bo th motos, fini sh ing well a head of th e competi tion. H art , last year's to p Northwest 125cc rider , p laced second in bot h motos af ter worki ng his way tip to the second spo t in both races. Pro caliber H onda rider Eri c Hall made his competitive debut after a leng th y vacation fro m the MX wars, running 'u p fro nt in the first rac e on ly to have problem s 1 ro p him back. The second race found Ha ll taking th e fourth spot. H onda riders Darren Rogers, Bryan Birkestol a nd Don Bisceglia rounded out the to p five. T he 250cc Pro class saw specta tors lin ing the fences in both mo tos to ca tch a g li mpse of some o f th e most exci ting race ac tio n seen in these parts for some tim e. Mickey Thompson Ultracross winner a nd runnerup, T yler a nd Graves, alo ng with Hart, put on a gr ea t sh ow. The first race found Hart taking th e holeshot with T yle r, Graves, Bisceglia and Ka wasaki rider Dennis Sweeton followin g. H a rt led for o n ly a short while as T yler too k over th e lead for .the remainder o f the mo to, The race that followed was grea t, th ough, as T yler was chased by Hart a nd G raves by mere bike len g ths for a so lid nine laps. The mo to ended with th e top fin ishe rs in th a t order. The seco nd ra ce found H ar t again . taking th e ho leshot, while T yler ducked under Graves to tak e seco nd. T yler again grabbed th e lead o n la p one and set o ut to take the overall , b ut thi s time Han had different ideas. H art dogged Tyler until th e fourth lap when he got past the, Yama ha pi lot on.the downhill but was 'passed back la ter in the la p. After trying again the nex t ' Iap , H a n finall y repassed Tyler for good a lthough all th ree riders remained close un til the finish. H ar t's win gave him the ov era ll with T yler a n d G ra ves second and third. T he Nort hwest's Up The Hill class for riders 25- to 30·years-old, is gaining rapid popularity and today's race fo und Ron Su n, Scott Wi ll ia ms a nd J eff Birkesto l, all on H ondas, ba ttli ng for to p honors. Su n smoked everyone in the first race but Wi lliams looked strong in the seco nd race, passing Su n to take th e overall via a 2-1 ta lly.
