CErn h' la' 'j:t -....:;:::.:: ' I •• S 4 W Ride a bikel . I can't help but chuckl e wh en I read the letters regarding th e time spent exiting Laguna Seca. I live in Santa Maria and I am not used to spending hours in traffic lines. And I didn't at Laguna Seca! From the motel in Monterey to a parking place ' between turns nine and 10 was 30 minutes. As for exiting, I was 'o n Highway 68 and Reservation Road within 30 minutes of beginning my departure. . How? First I entered through the ' old South Boundary Road at 7 a.m. Second, I left through Baylou Canyon Road. Third and most . important, I rode a motorcycle! Now if everyone rod e a motorcycle would there be a traffi c problem? Anywhere? CARL MUNTER Santa Mar ia, CA Should have stayed home Boy it sure makes me mad to see all these people getting so upset over the little traffic problem we had at the Laguna Seca USGP. If the se people can't handle a few (lots) of cars in their way maybe th ey should have stayed at home and cut the grass or left the track at noon, I was ready for th is race and I enjoyed every minute of my weekend, even the way out. I was busy looking over my program, and ' was in awe of what I had just seen. The GP riders are or should be every cyclist's envy. By the way , thanks for the pictures in your coverage of Laguna Seca, You caught me taking a picture of Eddie (Lawson) in the winner's circle. I'm the guy above the guy with his hands in the air. AUDIE ANDREWS Lodi, CA What it was like What a marvelous writer William ' Edgar (Cycle Dreams) is! He's succeeded in achieving what I once wished for - to capture the spirit of riding in words. Cycle Dreams is the first item I turn to when I receive Cycle News. For some reason, I can no longer get back to the biking world he wri tes about, but he beautifully describes what it was like when I was there. JOE McLAUGHLIN Redline Communications New Philadelphia, OH Godspeed, Buzz My friend Buzz Eckenberg is dead. He seemed so permanent and now is gone. Buzz suffered a heart attack " and passed away during a rnoto at tile Sierra Old Timers National at Marysville, California, on April 30. He was 71 and had been active in motorcycling for more than 50 years. Starting as a dirt tracker in the Washington area in the 30's, Buzz never lost his enthusiasm for riding. He had anenCYclopedicknowled!?e of the trails of northern California and Nevada. I think his best legacy will be the rediscovery work he did on the Pony Express Trail and the various immigrant trails to California and Oregon. Buzz had what seemed like inexhaustable energy, attending land use and other meetings important to motorcycling, running search and rescue operation s, writing advoca cy letters, exploring old trails, racing, running club functions , spinning tall tales , camping, and most of all just riding off-road motorcycles. . He was a one-off and irreplaceable. I will miss him terribly. Godspeed, Buzz. FRED SMITH Cool, CA Sug gested retail price I'm a little irritated. i recently went to my local dealer to buy a case of Spectro pre-mix (oil). I've been buying it for a year now at $2.65 per .pint but this time the guys told me that the price would have to be raised to the suggested retail price of $3.15. That's outrageous I "If you want to purchase their (Spectre ) items we 'll gladly contact another dealer for you ," my local dealer said, " bu t we will no longer carry Spectro products for the simple reason that we refuse to be told by a distributor that we can't sell their products at less than their suggested retail price." Can someone explain this? Why do dealers have to raise the price for the little guy (the consumer) when he 's giving the distributors the price . they ask for? I just can't see paying the higher price, so if need be I'll d iscontinue buying Spectro products. Last year, because of a last minute change, Cherry Creek was not sanctioned by the AMA_ When this fact was mentioned in Cycle News some riders thought that the rac e was canceled. This wasn 't the case but th is year th e race is back wi th an AMA sanc tio n. In fact, Ch erry Creek '88 is a round of th e AMA National Champion ship H are & H ound Series and will tak e pl ace on May 29. The Sugarloafers M.C., the organizing club, has taken out a bank loan to assure th e success of th e event. The Sugarloafers are the same club that invited Louis " Phantom Duck" McKey to Cherry Creek in 1982 to be the official starter. That year each rider donated a dollar to the Duck; jack johnson, the overall winner, donated half of his contingency prizes, and the Sugarloafers donated their profits. Over $2000 was raised and helped us get the Barstow-toVegas race back. In 1978, the year the Sugarloafers took over the Cherry Creek race, a push-rod, four-stroke class . was started in honor of Al Rogers who won Cherry Creek six times on a Triumph 650cc twin. Al rode the race in 1978 and easily won the class. California riders have dominated the class on Triumphs until last year when Ray Faust won on a BSA 500cc single. This year every rider who en ters th e push-rod, four-stroke class , the Dinosaur class, will receive a plaque. The plaque lists all the Dinosaur class winners from 1978 to . the 'present and is designed to accom. odate the names of the winners until the year 2007. If you are interested in competing in the Dinosaur class at Cherry Creek '88, call me between 4 and 10 p.m. at 818/443-9630. For information about the ra ce and all the other classes, call Kevin at 801/864-3432 during the day or Phil at 801/8644342 evenings. If you ride this event you will rate it as one of the best. I have referred to it as the Indy 500 of desert events. See you at the Creek! . MARK WADDLE Marion,OH A recent U.S . Supreme Court decision says a ' manufacturer has the right to refuse to sell its products to a dealer who will not charge consum ers the suggested retail price for the products. Needless to say, both dealers and consumers also have the right not to purchase specific products. The decis ion is yours, Mark . . . Editor. . M issed Laguna Seea Helpl I missed the 1988 U.S. GP at Laguna. Seca, in person because of exams, and on TV because of a telethon. Will someone please let me borrow a VHS videotape so I can finally see the 'ra ce? I will gladly ' offer : a) any 1987 GP videos you want, b) a case of .Molson Canadian Lager, or c) my firstborn son. Mail the tape first class. I promise to return same within a month. JOHN R. BROWN North Star Racing PH 8 - 368 Eglinton E. Toronto, Ontario M4P IL9 Canada 416/484-4896 Cherry Creek '88 The Cherry Creek desert race in Delta, Utah, has been an on-going event since 1960 and to many of us older riders it is one of the best and most colorful races to ride. It is similar to the original Big Bear race that started in California's Lucerne 'Valley and ended at Big Bear. PAT OWENS Temple City, CA Welcome back On behalf of the Soboba Band of Mission Indians, we would like to publicly thank Malcolm Smith and all of the motorcycle riders for their participation and cooperation that made the Soboba Trail Ride an enjoyable and safe ride for everyon e. If all motorcyclists would behave in this fine manner, more people would open their land for your use. Malcolm, you and your friends are welcome to come back for a Soboba Trail Ride next year.
