ROUND THREE AXTON, VIRGINIA JEFF WARD SWEEPS 250cc CLASS WITH Joe Pittman won the 750cc and Open Production classes duri ng WMRRA's season opener at Seattle Int ern ational Raceway. Pittman, Pinkstaff dominate Seattle RR By Jane Steele SEATTLE, WA, MAY I J oe Pittman and Keith Pinkstaff each won two cla sses at th e Washington Motorcycl e Road Ra cing Association 's season opener at Seattle International Raceway. Heavy rain, hail , cold temperatures a n d a n o ily track marred the da y's ra cing. The H ighl in e H onda/Suzuki 750 Producti on qualifier was th e second race of th e da y, and one of only two to be co m p leted before racin g was temporaril y h alted. Insulate Industries-sponsored Crain Trinder a p pea red to h ave m echanical p roblems a nd put his h and up to p it. Trinder the n decided to co nti nu e and pull ed b a ck o u t in to the fray, unawar e h is bik e was pourin g o il on to th e tra ck. Trinder was ab le to co ntin ue for another lap before his bike exp loded in a clo ud of smoke on th e front stra ig h t. As rider s assembled o n th e grid for th e next heat race , reports ca me in of o il a ll around th e track, an d th e already miserable weather took a tum for th e worse. Race officials reluctan tly called a ha lt to th e racing whi le crews cleaned th e track. By ea rly a fternoon th e hail had stopped, th e track was clean and racmg continued. Only two of th e four-lap qualifier s had been completed, so race officials decided to move directly into th e main even ts. The Highline Honda/Suzuki 750 Producti on main event saw Suzuki GSXR-mounted Mike Sullivan grab the holeshot, but by th e seco n d lap h e h ad been p as sed by Trinder, m ounted o n a fresh GSXR, and Pittman. By th e third la p Zlock Ra cing/Bell evue Suzu ki 's Pittman swe p t past T rinder o n the o utside a nd was sta rt ing to pull away from th e p a ck. P aul son ' s Suz u ki sponsore d Sullivan a n d Trinder jousted for th e next few laps, th en Trinder pulled away and Everett Suzuki 's Doug Renfrow took over third from Sullivan. Then , in a seeming rerun of theheat race, smoke began to pour from Trinder 's en gi ne . This tim e , however , Tri nder promptly pulled off and the tra ck remained clean. Pittman cruised to an easy vi ctory and th e Suzuki contingen cy mon ey , fo llowed b y Ren fro w an d Su lliv an. . MA RIES , ID , MAY I Bo Danielson a n d Frank Buell teamed up to take th e o vera ll win toda y at th e St. J oe Cycl e Club's a n n u al T ag T eam Hare Scrambles. The race cons is ted of eigh t laps aro u n d an approxim ate 24-minute co use th rough tight wo ods a n d muddy uphills and downhills, with each rider a lte rnating laps. At th e so u nd of th e gun 40 teams were o ff. At th e end of th e firs t lap it wa s Chuck Mooreland in first. As his partner Ed Epler took off from th e swi tch area. A few seco nds ba ck came Buell and o ff wen t his partner Daniel son. Bu ell went ba ck to th e pits to get dry clothes and gloves due to all th e mud and took longer than he thought his partner would be. Danielson came in at th e en d of th e second lap in front, about a minute ahead of Ep ler. Buell didn't go through th e swi tch area correctly at th e end of lap three, and hi s teammate got held back o ne minute at th e start of th e fourth lap. Danielson left with a 26-second lead an d th e Danielson/Buell team went on to win by over three m inutes. The Old Timers class was a cin ch for th e Husqvarna team of Don Christi e a nd David Russell as they cru ised in a head o f the Pete Hu tchin so n / Ji m H ansen and Mi ke Ren tlan d/Bill T aylor teams.
