Ironically, both Kayo en tries ended up with 95 laps apiece. . The race was restarted a nd again R ussell bolted a wa y. H a rd Core Racing's Shawn Ni col off was o n th e ' gas and began moving the team up th rou gh the field at a bl istering rat e. In on e hour, H ard Core went from ninth to fourt h p lace overall. Fifty One Fift y remained in thi rd , two la ps down to Team Suzuki go ing into the fin al hou r of racing. H uman Race r iders Kurt H all and Andy Fenwick pi cked up rides with o ther teams after their bike qui t, and both were making grea t co nt ributions. With H all o n boa rd , Badger Racing began moving up in the standings. Wi th an hour left, th e Badger Suzuki was running in fifth aft er holding l Oth p lace earlier. "We came here hoping to get a top 10 finish; we really didn't expect to be in a position to do this well ," commented Badger 's Duane Dreyer. T wo time U.S. Superbike Champion Wes Cooley had never ridden at Roebling Ro ad before , but by th e last hour the crafty vete ra n was turning 1:19 lap times. T here was littl e hope of ca tch ing Solmax, so Coo ley was just riding fast and enjoying th e raci ng unti l, withou t . warn ing, a rider he was closing in on sudden ly changed lines, forcing him off th e track at 120 mph. Cool ey tried to figh t th e bucking ma chine, bu t it fin ally pitched him off sendi ng ma n and machine cartwheeling. Fort una tel y Cool ey o n ly slig h tly injured hi s hand, but th e team was out of th e competition. Solmax now had a safe five lap lead on second pl ace Fift y One Fifty. The o n ly race co mi ng down -to-thewire was in the H eavyweight Superbike class, as Hall was reeling in H ar d Core's Ray Yoder. Yoder a nd H ar d Core were saved by th e checkered flag, crossing the line in thi rd pl ace a scant 16 seconds ahead of Badger Racing. . R ussell did a victory la p on the Solmax Suzuki, standing u p wi th bo th hands off the bar s and waving the checkered fl ag a la Kevin Sch wan tz. Sol max set a goal of winning the H ea vyweight Production class th is year, but now th e WE RA Championship seems to be in their grasp .
