on th ewann-up lap and it suited him just fine. On the restart he bl itzed the field by runnin~ up high . McDonnell finished a distant second with Joel Green in tow. Bennett a nd Jim Rosa ro u nded o ut the top five. McDonnell , on a Harley, took th e LCQ after di cing with Dave Hebb. Carr chose th e outsii:le pol e position for the main even t, with th e Atherton brothers side-by-side in row two. Carr and Estep battled for th e lead going into tum one. Carr came out on top with Kevin Atherton and Villella fighting for the number three position. Graham held six th on lap three but was rapidl y moving up, as was Hames. Nearl y th e wh ol e field had begun to use th e hi gh ~oove and .Ia p tim es were dro pping bel ow qualifying Limes. Carr started to pull aw ay from Estep on lap four with H oward running in third and Kevin Atherton in fourth; brother Brian was mired in midpack after a poor start. Graham took fifth from Boody on la p five, and on lap six Hames blew past the Boody/Graham battle to claim fifth. .~ At th e halfway point, Carr had six seconds on Atherton, who was being pressured by Hames. Estep had dropped to fourth and had Graham and Boody allover his rear fender. Bri an Atherton moved past the GrahamlBoody soiree with an inside pass in tum two on lap 17. Lap 20 saw the from wheel of Chris Carr's Harley shoot into the air as he crossed the finish line. Kevin Atherton hung on for his best finish ever in second, while third went to a charging Hames. Estep took fo u rth with Brian Atherton scoring a hard-eamed fifth. After the race , Carr thanked Ro n Wood. "I'd paint Wood-Rotax on it (the tank) except for contract reasons," said Carr. "The bike worked flawlessly. We were fortu na te when Ascot rained out because we had mo to r p roblem s. Watering the track during the semi made the track faster. I ran the high line the who le race and turned my fastest laps in the ma in ." Kevin Athe rton was excited about his second-place finish. . . "I'm ecstaticl" said Atherton. " I didn't know in was gonna be able to ho ld on. It wore me o ut. After the five-la p sign came out, I swore we did 10 more laps. I said, 'come o n white flag !' I tried to run low after the start but went backwards, so I went up high and it started looking up. You had to stuff people in th e turns to pass," said Hames. "I wish we had a few more laps. I co uld have caught up to the leaders." Brian' Atherton said, " I got stuck • behind Bood y and Graham but once I got around th em I worked m y wa y up.
