ROSELAWN , IN, MAY I "Wh en you win " Last year at this time I was recovering from knee surgery," said Hawkins. "I wasn't riding 100% and I was losing when I knew I could be winning. That's not much fun. This year is different: I'm feeling good, I've got good equipment and I'm having fu n. Who knows what might happen." Bob Brown, president of Mid-West National Enduro Riders (MNERA) and the energetic course layou t captain Cissy Webb were p rimarily responsible for the course laid out in three loops so all gas stops were on the club grounds. "We used a lot of resets, (53 mi les) this year and the less experienced riders loved it and the double As bared with us ," said ' Cissy. "We had over 200 people working this enduro and without them it just wouldn't have been possib le." " I used every minute of the resets," said High Point A Yamaha-mounted Fritz Kadlec. "In the first loop I though t my ignition was 'going' but it wa s th e air filt er. I used all of the 20 minu tes to clean it , cha nge th e plug and so me other stuff. " " I' ve been away from National end uros for a cou p le o f years, and I'v e go t to get back to running with th e boys," said Kadlec. "I know how fast I was going and the y were still beating me." Reigning Enduro Champion Kevin Hines, riding his first enduro after breaking his collarbone this spring, didn't have any problems with his 350cc KTM, but he strayed off the arrows in the first loop and came into the first gas with an extra four points. "There were two sets of arrows, one from another run I guess, and I followed them and by the time I backtracked I had lost the time. This has always been a tight run and I just couldn't afford to give away tha t much time." Kurt Ho ugh, riding Larry Roeseler's 250cc Kawasaki and sponsored by Kawasaki/Malcolm Smith/Scott Goggles/Dunlop/Ghost Rider, was a point ahead of Hawkins at the first gas going 1-2 and zeroing four checks, while Hawkins went 1-1-2 and three zeros. But in the second loop Hough gave it back dropping four to Randy's three and they went to the final loop dead even. "Randy and I both dropped one point at the first check in the last loup but then I broke the hose for my front brak e and Randy is just too tough to beat without a front brake. I tried to keep up the pace and scared myse\£ a half dozen times then I dialed it ba ck a little and he beat me by one point." Jeff Fredette, (Kawasaki /Tones
