The five-foo t steps and slippery hillsides sui ted th e aggressi ve riding of J ohn Ekdahl as he too k his Beta to the Expert class win over Wayne Gal vin. Geoff Aaro n beat all challengers for the Advanced class win on h is T ryal s Shop-sponsored Ap rili a. T rues da le put in a super ride on hi s Montesa to take th e Senior A win, wh il e Bill McC orm ick beat AI Samuelman in a tie-break er rid e-off to take th e Senior B win. A close finish in th e Novice class saw Mark Lazarski edge Brian McDermott for th e win . Resu lts ElTELBR UCK , L UXEMBOURG, APR. 17 Two-time World Champion Thierry Michaud scored his third win in four starts with a commanding performance in th e Luxembourg round of the Worl d Champion ship Series a t Ette lbr uck. The Fantic rider, wh o won his titl es in 1985 a nd 1986, was tied with event ual runner-up Donato Miglio aft er the first lap of the 16-section course but on th e next two laps Michaud po sted th e low est sco res and handily topped Fantic-mounted Mig lio, 135 to 148. Three-time World Champion Eddy Lejeune gave Merlin their bestever World round finish as he took third, II marks down on runner-up Miglio. Current World Champion J ordi Tarres finished fourth on his Beta, j us t one mark down from Lej eun e, Fantic's Steve Saunders was fifth , two marks behind Tarres. Sixth p lace went to Diego Bosis, followed by Renate Chiaberto, P a sca l Couturier and Louis Gallach. The opening lap of th e trial was run in dry conditions but a thunderstorm made for slip pery going on the n ext two laps. The scores reflected th e change in traction as Michaud's first lap produced a 31, his second a 48, and his third and final lap a 56. With much of th e course being run on roc ks , th e ra i n turned d irt a pproach lines into m uddy ones and that mud was carried o nto the rocks by th e co m pe ti to rs a n d wh eel spinnin g, point robbing attempts at some sectio ns ended in dead stops and " fives." Although th e ra in turne d a difficult course irito a very difficult one, th e open ing lap in the dry showed on e and all th at the first-ever Lu xembourg World round wouldn't be a cakewalk. The opening sectio n saw rider after rider fail to co mplete it; Michaud him sel£ dr ew a five wh en he came to a stop jus t yards short of the end of the sectio n. The second section was eq ua lly difficult and stopped m an y rid ers until Micha ud negotiat ed it wi th a single da b. Sections three a nd four p roved easier and most of the top r iders had little difficulty with them. Sectio n five was another story a nd sto p ped top riders like T arres and Saunders. In fact, no rider escaped sectio n five with out collecti ng at leas t three marks. Section six was cleaned by Mich aud and others, bu t th e following section, a long twisting ascen t, . proved diffi cult for all. Michaud looked set to clean it but had to da b his way o ut of th e sectIo n. The remaini ng sectio ns caused less problem s, although many provided spectacular p erformances to th e delight of the specta tors. The rain dramatically altered the trial , but th e Warken club wa s commended for th eir efficiency in organizing th e even t which at th e very least produced, in the opening lap , a spectacu lar trial.
