Colorado Many who competed i n New Mexico left immediately after that event in order to dri ve to the Colorado venue seven h ours away . There, a t abo ut 6000 feet eleva tio n, Larry Sch melz le a nd th e Rocky Mountain T rials Associatio n h ad laid ou t 18 Championship sec tions for th ei r three-loop even t. T he sectio ns differed from th e previous day 's in th at there were ge nera lly tighter, m ore technical obstacl es. And unlike New Mexico, th e weather varied a bit more; m ostl y coo l, clouds 'occasion ally blew o ver, and a b it of sn ow even fell at one hi gh point on the loo p. Young didn 't seem to be affected by th e altitude or th e drive; he led the field over th e first loop with his 15. Colorado r esident Manniko trailed by two while Andersson had 19. Andersson, however, wa s merely ' warming up and he improved with each loop, including his bri llian t four-point final lo op. Young's scores over the final two circuits read 25 and 24 while Manniko's were 30 and 19. (Many riders incurred slight time penalties which are refl ected in' the final scores from both events.) "T oday, I think it was lots of p hysical co n d i ti o n in g ( th a t counted)," Young ob served. "I felt . I had half the strength of yesterday. I put 150 percent into yesterday and it drained m e for today." Ander sson , th e ' 85 Swedish National champ, was understandably thrilled with' his result which drew him even with Young in th e point ch ase once aga in' " I was happy to do well . H ere, th e engi ne runs very bad, and with 18 sections it was a long da y. This was a little like an easy world round. This wa s better than I think it would h ave been. " Regardin g h is la st loop, Andersson claimed, "T h is terrain, .com pared to Europe, has so much grip; everything sti cks much better. But then, I don't know where to .put my foot down ( for a selective dab). I must wait and wa tch to see wh at every body else does; I'm still leam ing how to ride here (in Am erica)." So, with four ro u n ds down and four to go, th e only su re thing seems to be that Andersson an d Beta TR34 R ep lica - m o u nted Young are so even ly .match ed thar .it wouldn't be a t all surprising to see them tied at the en d of the series. " I like it," Young said. " It's wo rking out great and it m ake s it fun." However, he acknowledged that the n ext tw o rounds co u ld be quite d ifficu lt , considering th ey'll be held in T enness ee, Ander sson's ado p ted h ome sta te. " It wa s too dry (a t th ese ' two ' events) ," An de rsso n claimed, "so I can' t wa it fo r Ten nessee. " • THE FIRST THE BEST CYCLE NEWS Results . NEW MEXICO C'SHIP: 1. Ryan Young (Bet) 40.2; 2.
