TEAM Bally introduces B'ackwater 100 pinball machine By Mike Larson Ball y, ' th e wo rl d's largest manufac turer o f pinball machines, and Dave Coombs, the man beh ind th e infamous Blackwater 100, have teamed up to produce the Blackwater 100 pi nball mach in e, loosely based on th e race of th e same name. The ma ch in e is the brainch ild of Dennis Nordman, a motorcyclist and Bally em p loyee, who participat ed in th e Blackwat er 100 in 1977 and 1978. Nordman said he wanted to pu t a little back in to the sport he enjoyed and th ought that a p inball mach in e featurin g th e Blackwater wo u ld be a godd way to do that. Suzu ki graph ics are emblazoned on th e front of th e machi ne a nd alo ng th e sides, and many aftermarket companies' logos, such as Boyesen , Klo tz, Scott, Shoei, Gear Racewea r a n d O ' Nea l , a re also featured on " billboards" inside th e machine. The AMA has its logo on a bill board as well , and the phon e number of the AMA' s new mem ber hotline is also included. Coomb s said th at the logos on the machine appear as a " than k you" to all th e sponsors of hi s National Cro ss Country Series and he had asked' Ball y to include th em. J oe Colombero , press rela tion s manager at American Suzu ki Motor Corporation, is glad to see Ball y get involved in the motorcycle indus try, even in this small way. " Having a com pany from outside the motorcycle in dustry, suc h as Bally, get invo lved is somethi ng that we feel will help the sport," Colo rnbero said. " Hopefu lly this will help get kids interested in mo torcycles and draw new people into th e sport." Coombs feels the p inball mac h ine is somet hi ng dealers coul d use to hel p ge t cus tomers into their shops. "Most of the successful dea lers I see are th e ones who ha ve somethi ng other than mo torcyclesin the show room," said Coo mb s. "T hey have videos people can wa tch arid I thi n k that the pi nball mac hi ne fits in with that." Coombs also said he hopes that Bally's involveme nt may lead to o ther p roj ects wit h the company in the fu tu re. Ball y owns a casi no in Atlantic Ci ty, New J ersery, a nd Coomb s sai d he is hoping th at he ca n get togeth er with Ball y to organize a beach race, such as th ose held in Europe, along the Boardwal k in Atla ntic City, sometime in the future. The machine will be dis tri bute d to arcades around the U.S. and will also be found in Ball y's Aladd in's Cas tle fun cen ters in shopping ma lls, giv ing motorcycl is ts 'a n d no n motorcyclis ts alike a chance to " ride" the Blackwater 100 for 25¢. T he ga me itself is differen t from the norma l pinball mac hi nes mos t people are used to. The Blackwater game fea tures th ree ball s in play a t the same time, which are released from a sta rti ng ga te when th e ga me begins.
