Johnny McMillen (17) grabs the holeshot at the start of the second 250cc Novice moto at Finger Lakes. McMillen took the overall w in. the' remai n de r of the ra ce, but couldn't get by, finishing fourth ahead of H allak, Stahlman took the win ahead of Shumacher. In 250cc Intermediate action Jason Young took the win on his Kawasaki as first moto winner Greg Stahlman, on a J&W Kawasaki, injured a knee in the secon d moto. Phil Hess rode to second overall. Results Stahlman drives to Finger lakes MX win By Jim Roble 32 COLUMBIA, MO, APR. 17 Mike Stahlman drove all night from the Dallas Supercross Saturday night in Texas to Fingerlakes State Park in Missouri the next morning to totally dominated the 125 and 250cc Expert classes. Yamaha / JT/ Sco tt/ Ka l - G a r d sponsored Stahlman won all four motos of the 125 and the 250/500cc Money classes, holeshotting and building at least a 10-second lead in each race. The rea l battle in the SL Louis Honda-sponsored l25cc Expert class in moto one was over second place, as Bart Shiflett fought with Jeff Shumacher. The two riders fought side-by-side the entire moto, with Shiflett taking second barely ahead of Shumacher. Before moto two , the riders were given a practice lap to chec k out the rain slickened track. J&W Cycle's Sta hlman took the holeshot, but Shumacher used his years of experience on rough a cks to give Stahlman a battle. Shu macher pulled alongside his fellow Yamaha rider several time; , using his ability to brake later into comers to gain on Stahlman. Shiflett got off to a bad start but quickly passed his way to fifth place by using fast outside lines and avoiding the rain-slickened, hard-packed inside lines. Shiflett passed Suzuki rider Brad Hallak with a clean move over the rockers, but dropped back again shortly after. Hallak passed Honda rider Travis ' Kobush for third place, as Hallak, Kobush and Shiflett freight-trained around the track, never more than a few feet between them on lap three. Up front, Stahlman and Shurnacher continued their battle, about 10 seconds ahead of the fight for third. Kobush passed Hallak back for third in a back section, with Shiflett close behind in the whoops before the grandstand straight. All three riders were inches apart at times, and Shiflett and Kobush appeared to bump wheels in the 180-degree lefthander leading to the finish line, but Kobush maintained his pl ace ahead of Shiflett. Shiflett tried again to pass Kobush in the woods sectio n, and finally got by coming ou t of the woods. By this time, Stahlman had built a small lead over Shumacher, who had about eight seconds on Shiflett, Kobush stuck to Shiflett for o 5OAUTO: 1. Dust in Brewer (Yam); 2. Christopher Morrison (Suzt 3. Eidenberger plows Blackhawk Farms RR 'By Gordon Lunde ROCKTON, IL, AP R. 17 Port Washington, Wisconsin's, resident road racer John Eidenberger proved to be the man to beat at Blackh awk Far ms Raceway in the opening round of the Midwest Re!$ion AMA Championship Cup Senes. . Eidenberger got off to a quick start on board his P o rt Washington Yamaha/ Dunlop/ Phil Flack/Solm a x i E BC /F o x /P rogress i ve l Yos him ura- s p o n so r ed Yamaha FZR750 and p ut 17 seconds between himself and second place Jay Dun can by the halfway point of the eight la p event, Not having a Suzuki GSXR l loo for this Unlimited Super- sport Suzuki Cu p event, J ohn went after the Yamaha contingency in Unlimi ted GP wh ich is ru n concurrent at CCS events. By th e finis h he was a fu ll 25 seconds ahead of roo kie Expert J ay Duncan who, in turn, had a huge lead over the rest of the field. Eidenberger claimed the win in the G P class while Duncan had entered both fin ish i n g first Supersport, second G P but did not pick up any Suzuki cash as his GSX R750 IS no t eligible for the Unlimited mo ney. From big bikes to little bikes Eide nberger showed the fast way around this 1.8 mile course as he next trounced the Lightweight G P class. Yamaha FZR400 mounted for this race, he again took over at the start and built a comfortable lead in a short time. Kevin Gau gave chase on his Downers Grove Yamaha/Costeel AGV/ Spectro/Torq ue Center-spon sored FZR400 but could not get close. Gau may have been suffering problems due to a crash in pra ctice the previous day. Pau l No ble came o ut after almost a year's absence and gave notice he is still a threat in th e class with h is self-sponsored Yamaha RZ350 finishing third a few len gth s behi nd Gau. Sunda y p roved to be another winning da y for Eidenberger starti ng . with the H eavyweigh t Supersport event. It seems nobod y cou ld get"to turn one be fore the number 17 machine as again it was the GSX R of Eidenberger out front. Giving chase this time was Scott Zampach riding the Du n lo p/ Spectro / EBC/ MAC-sponsored Suzuki. As John stretched his lead, Zampach did the same to David Barnar d on the Kwik Cycle of Northbrook/Des Plai nes Suzuki. With the top th ree positions set early, attention moved to the freight train that was dicing for fourth. Jay Duncan held the spot until he crashed in the fast right-hand carousel o n lap four. Jed Kimla was handed the p lace but only hel d on for one lap as Andy Fenwick got by in turn one inside. Fenwick opened the door for .a few others as Kim la went wide to avoid hi m. With a clear track in front of him, Fenwick got the Metzeler/Fox/IRS/Human Race Team Suzuki closing on Barnard but it was too late. Ca nadian Mi ke Griffiths filled th e fifth place on the Suzuki Ro yal C i ty/ EBC/ Shoeil Avo n /Montieth Auto Body Mac chine. . Midd leweight Supersport turned into another battle in the ra nks as Eidenberger shot o ut fron t immediately on h is Suzuki 600 Katana. As he cruised to the win Do ug Callies on t he Salon de ' Espr i t/ H u p f' s Honda Hurricane and Scott Zamp- ach on a Katana went head -to-head the entire race. The two passed and repassed every lap until th e white flag lap. Callies said that after the race he thought he had made a mistake by leading into the last tum expecting Zam pach to draft by on the · straight, but Za m p ach 'sa id his Suzuki was no match for the H onda's horsepower and settled for third. Eide nberger and Zampach were the o nly money winners in the event as all other riders were on H urricanes. Alan Bertagnol i came in fourth on the North Shore Ra cing/ Metzeler/ R.D.' s Garage Honda and Robert Delie filled the fifth position on the Bob 's Bike Shop Machine. Scott Zampach was the spoiler to a perfect day for Eidenberger as the H eavyweigh t Superbike event got underway. Zampach finally got the holesho t over the pack and !lot to tum one first. This was to be hISrace as he never relinquished the lead. Eidenberger was only a few lengths be hind, but could not ge t close enough to strike for the lead. As in the other events, the rest of the field was back at least 10 seconds and was never a threat. . · Results EXPERT uw S/BK: 1. Andy Fenwick (Han). UW GP: 1. John Eidenberger (ya m); 2.
