Nolin wins third straight at Tubbs HS By Bob Bell PLASTER CITY, CA, AP R. 10 EI Cajon Honda/KSIIMaximasponsored Rob Nolin ran off with his third straight overall victory at the California Gold AMA Distri ct 38 Tubbs Stuck in the Mud Hare Scrambles at P laster City. . At the drop of the green flag Steve Walker shot out to :an early lead followed by Todd Cary, R obb ie Pippin and R o bert P ra th er , a ll mounted on open bikes. Nolin was buried back in the pack after a disma l start. "It started on the first kick but almost fou led a plug a nd took forever to rev up," said Nolin. H e hit check one 10th overal I. By the end of the first of four 20mile loops it was Wa lker rocketing down pit row with nearly a twominute advantage over Cary. " I knew it might come down to me a nd Nolin by the end so I needed as big a lea d as I could get," Wa lker said. Nolin had his 250 screaming and was already up to third, some 30 seconds behind Cary. Other early class leaders were Scott Sease leading the 125s, Keith Sievers (Hon) with the Vet lead and Monte Lee heading the Seniors. Lap two found Nolin continuing to charge. He stormed past Cary and cut nearly 45 seconds off of Walker's lead as Cary settled into a comfortable third overall. Tim Funk was on the gas as well and had taken fourth overall, moving up five positions from his first lap performance. When Walker came flying into the pits at the end of lap three, he was not alone. Nolin had carved off over a minute and was now only 17 seconds behind. "As I turned down pit row, I saw Walker. I knew at that time I was going to get him," stated Nolin. As he passed by the Wa lker pit, he confidently motioned thumbs up. The two riders were only feet apart as they disappeared from pit row. Wa lker rode determined as Nolin began poki ng hi s front whee l into Wa lker's view, looking for an opening. After trying twice unsuccessfully, Nolin finally took command. "I held him o ff twice but finally he got by and there was nothing that I cou ld do," said Walker. From then on it was clear sailing for Nolin, and at the finish, Nolin. smoked in with the overall win and set the fastest lap time of the day as well . "In one of my pits, my bike died, we almost didn 't get it going," said Nolins. "I had to keep the throttle wide open while they dumped gas. " While Nolin was lucky to have finished, another race was going on for second overall. After his close fought battle, Walker had developed a flat and Cary was closing in. With only yards to go Cary jumped alongside of Wa lker and they both pinned their throttles heading toward the checkered. Cary squeaked out a 10 foot victory for the Open class win, over Wa lker, who was third overall, second O pen. Second in the 250cc class and , fourth overall went to Funk. In the 125cc class, Sease continued to lead for the first three laps, but Wes Enz chopped away at the lead and they ba ttled on the final loop . until Em pulled clear and took the hard earned victory by 12 seconds. Results FINISH: 1. Rob Nolin (Hon); 2. Todd Cary (Han); 3. St eve Wal ker (Hon); 4. Tim Funk (Vam); 5. Marty Kamery (Yam). By lap two Lisa Peterson displaced Tami Rice for second and set off in pursuit of Smith. Behind this trio, a battle raged for fourth between Dana Evenson and Brenda Conner. The two stayed close for six ' of the eight laps in a battle that took them right up to Rice. Up front Peterson had moved into the lead with Smith close behind. The two riders had pulled away ' from the battle now being waged for third as Rice had her hands fu ll with Evanson a nd Conner.
