Th at it was Sunday. R ide Day, an d I was h ome in my pa jam as instead of out in m y leathers. Bedded with fl u , I was a slave to m edicin es and plen ty of rest . A n d liq u ids - en dless gall ons of juices, teas, nast y broths. Bu t n one of it reli eved th e fever I h ad. And so with little resistance I dropped in to a w ell of self- p reserv ation, that h eal ing escap e call ed Sleep. And within it, I rode. M y bik e - it is an-rmormous tw in! It s ma ssive cyli n ders must be four, fi ve liters each! I ts p ow er, ast on ish ing! Th e road , th e road is a ribbon of g leaming si lve r wa rping in to the clouds. H igher, sm oothe r, quick er. Th en so meth ing is bro ken , something I have to 'rep air before I carl go on . Bu t th e own er's m an ual is in hierogl yph ics described by odd birds an d fa n tastic rep tiles. I awake persp iring. It w as lunchtime, m y son told m e. H e had a tray of p lacebos - more herb tea, dry toast, ap p le slices. And th ere was a g lad sm ile crossin g his mouth. H e had n't seen m e on a Sun da y morn ing for months. Bu t h is fa ce quickl y lost shap e, m el ted, and th en v ap orized. Drift ing, fall ing, I am .sw ep t awa y by th e internal cu rren ts once more. I gaze again at my dream- ride speedo , Th e di g its are triple, th e road ah ead the best I' ve ever seen , m y powerband limitless as I ride fas ter an d keen er than ever before. T he fever pa in sp irals, eases, slip ping awa y. Th is time th e ride is aboard a gravity.bike tha t sk ims th e gridded surface of an alien orb. M y engine glows w hite hot ben eath m e. Wait in g p atrol cars are frozen again st oval ne on billboards, trap ped forever, u n able to give chase - and th e realm of riding m o tor cycles is n ow uiithout peril of any k in d. T here are n o oil slic ks , n o railw ay irons to sk id on , n o biti ng dogs or lan e-m erg ing monsters or ogres turn ing left on my pat h. I go w ith th e sp irit of one invin cible. There is only th e rid e, miracu lo us ly pro tected and utterly su blime. A nd when I o pened m y eyes, refreshed in th e midnig ht room where I cou ld barely hear m y w ife's breath , I sens ed Su nday had come an d it had gone.
