Oxley on toP. at Speedway USA By Scott Daloisio VICTORVILLE, CA, APR. 10 Brad Oxley, the defending National Speedway Champion, notched his initial win of the year when he de.fe~ted longtime veteran Billy Gray to wm the Scratch main at Speedway USA's season opener Sunday afternoon. Even though the temperature was hovering around the 1000 mark, O.xley had an enjoyable drive from hIS San Clemente home ' to the Victorville track. Once there he had an enjoyable ride on his' potent Weslake. The .real story in the Scratch main was Gray. The wily veteran, who had never qualified for a .Scratch main in Speedway USA's history, gave the National champ all he could handle. Phil Collins the winner of the season opening Scratch ~ams at Costa Mesa and Ascot , had hIS PPT on the pole for the main with Grayout of two, Oxley in three ami young Gary Hicks in four. Hicks was rolling backwards as the tapes ~ere released and that quickly took him out of contention. Collins was out first but Oxley swept inside of-him as they came off tum two on the opening lap. ~ray then pushed Collins back to third with an inside move as they came off tum four near the end of the first circuit. The crowd cheered when sentimental favorite Gray went by Collins but when he closed in on leader Oxley, the crowd stood up and roared. Gray pulled directly up to Oxley's rear tire as they came off tum two on the second lap. . Gray stayed glued to Oxley's back tire until they exited the final tum o n the .last lap. There, he went wide a nd tned to go around th e lanky National Champion. The fans went wild but th ere wasn 't enough drive <;> n th e outside for Gray to get the Job done and he had to settle for second behind the champ. Results . SCRATCH: 1. Brad Oxley (Wes); 2. By George Brinkwart LOCKE, NY, APR. 10 Expert rider Carl Benedit did a repeat performance of last year 's D-4 Trials opener by again winning the first even t today in Locke. Benedict's smoo~h style.of riding kept both rider a";d bike upright on the slimy course. ' HIS best ride was in section five where riders had to negotiate a threefoot log ledge covered by running water. Further up the creek there was a series of rock ledges where riders had to make a sharp right-hand tum and blast up the creek bank. Two small poles, about one bike length apart, lay across the side hill and stopped most riders. Those who survived that trap went on to scramble up a steep hill to find the exit markers: Benedict dropped only three Pl?mts here all day, giving him a .55 pomt total for the day. Those riders with a smooth touch de~inite1y had an advantage. Jody Bliss was no exception as he won the Advanced cl~ss with 69 points. Intermediate Charlie Camin seemed 'to be pleased with his new mount, winning that class with 41 points, while LaVern Bowen 'won the Senior A class and Ron Bors had his Fantic dialed in for his win in th e Senior B class . : Novice rider Jason Kusnecki won his class with only 28 points for the day. Kusneski was able to ace section f<;>~r with some very consistent TIding. . Results EX: 1. Carl Benedict (Yam); 2. Bryan Benjamin (Yam); 3 . Greg Bolt (Hon); 4 . Collins collects Ascot Spdwy victory By Scott Daloisio GARDENA, CA, APR. 7 ~u~in9 intermission at Chris Agajarnan s Ascot South Bay Stadium sea~on o~ner on Thursday night, Phil Collins shook his head and said "I don 't feel right. I just don't feei good." That sounded like a good omen for his competition but less than one hour later, Collins raced away for the win in th e Scratch main event. . Collins was fresh off a strong win at the Costa Mesa season opener less ~han .a week earlier. The only flaw in hIS performance came in his Scratch semi. He had a sizable lead over Bobby Schwartz and Alan Christian when they came out of the . turn for the final time. Collins parked and his English built PPT . 500 did everything but stall. He managed to get the machine back under power just before Schwartz and Christian shot by. . Joining Collins on the main event . grid were Steve Lucero, Bobby Ott and Schwartz. Schwartz was never around for the stan of the four lapper, He rolled into the tapes and one of them made contact with the hot header pipe on his machine and ' melted through. That earned him an early trip back to the pits. Ot~, who ~as gating better than any rider all mght long, jumped into the lead at the outset but he did a wheelie off the turn and - headed straight for the crash wall. By the nrne he recovered, Collins had blazed a path by on the inside line and was gone. Ott's problems mounted when he went down in the next bend and let Lucero by. Collins had a big advantage and Lucero would have had to pull off a miracle to ca tch him in the remaining three circuits. Being that miracles are hard to come by these days, all he was able to do was put a small dent in the personable rider's advantage. _ Results SCRATCH; 1. Phil Collins (PPT); 2. Steve Lucero (Gdn); 3. Bobby On (Gdn).
