After three laps Russ ell had a onesecond lead over th e three-way battle for third involvingjames, Harth and Smith. On lap seven: Smith passed James ' on the back straight to take over second for good. Russell cont inued to pull away for the field and won with Smith second and James winning the battle for thi rd over Harth. The A Production race saw Harth cross the finish Iin e .Iirst but he was later disqualfied for running a sixspeed gearbox in his GSXR 1100, and that made Russell , who had crossed the line behind Harth, the winner. R ussell continued his domination in the Form ula Open class. He battled with ' Pa u l Bray and J eff Duckworth but once again-took the win by turning consistent " 59's " with a 59:47 second la p breaking Doug Polen 's counterclockwise track record. Beckington blasts' Pontiac Amateur SX By Norm West PONT1AC , MI, APR. 9-10 After faci ng muddy .and freezing q ual ifiers, amateur riders who fin ished in th e top 10 at anyone of the seven suc h races throug hout Michigan were unleashed on th e Pontiac Silverdome Supercross track before, during and after the factory pro s battled on the same course. Ama teur action bega n on Sat urday in front of more th an 40,000 fans as J eff Beckin gton p ut on a show by clear ing th e triple jumps with ease to beat Rick Pinney in the 250cc A class. Becki ngton came back again on Sunday to win the 125cc A class over David Beckin gton. The 50cc Autom at ic cla ss was run during intermission on Sa turday nigh t and the riders were cheered o n , by the fans as they cleared j ump s and the bridge just as the factory pros had done ear lier. Winner Nicholas Wey was int erviewed by race announcer Larry Maiers and told the audience that Kaw asaki 's J eff Ward was his favorite rid er, which brought Ward out of th e pits and to the winner's circle to pr esen t a nd a utograp h Wey's tro phy for winning. Du ring Su nday 's int ermission the 80cc (7, 11) class took the track and Matt Max imoff sh owed flaw less techniq ue an d poise to tak e the win. Wh en asked by Maiers whi ch he liked best, m o torcycl es o r girls, Maximoff replied. " My motorcycle." Maximoff later too k first p lace in the 60cc class follo wed by John Kidd . Jeff Curry cont in ued hi s winning wa ys from qual ifiers and took th e 80cc (12-15) clas s win over Justin J arrett. Eri c McLear charged the double and triple jumps to .win the 125cc B class over Jeremy Buehl and Chris P o m eroy. Mc Lear a ls o finished second in the 125cc Junjor class behind David Beckington. Taking the Woods 30+ class was Mike McIntosh over Harold Neighbors. Both riders were al so winners of qualifying races. The Senior 40+ class was dominated by David Curry who beat Keith O 'Boyle not only at Pontiac but also in the qualifying races. Second pl ace went to Ch ad Lou gh, who was followed by Edd ie Adda ir and Kevin Au stin. In th e first rna to, Honda rider Joe Mo toe stole the hol eshot bu t crashed before reac h i n g th e first jump, ha nding the lead over to Austin. Silvaro le settled into second, followed by Craig Johnson. Silvarole quickly found his way into the lead with Austin dropping back to second place, whi le Crai g Barbour slipped into third a nd Lo ugh into fourth. Lough soo n made a move' on Barbour and advanced to third. Lough kep t the . pressure on Austin, bu t they fin ished with Silvarole in th e lead, followed by Austin, Lough and Barbour: .In ro und two, Silvarole too k the holeshot and settled into a com manding lead , wh ich he would hold dow n unti l the checkered flag waved. Lough finished up second follo wed by Addair and Kevin Bowles. Jay Roberts blas ted int o the lead a t the start of the firs t 250cc Ama teur moto ahead of J immy Johnson, J eff Shuler and Addair. J ohnso n p ushed past Roberts for the lead less than half way int o the first la p. Shuler pu lled u p to second and tu rn ed up the burner to keep the heat on and jumped into first . Lo ugh , moved into th ird and quickly went to first w here h e finis hed w ith Shuler , Aus tin and Bow les close behind. Sh uler nailed the holesh ot in th e second moto ahead of JimmyJ oh nson , Addair and Austin. Lough mad e his move on Shuleron the final lap, and Sh uler had to settle for second. Brown best at CheyenneMX By Larry Johnson CHEYENNE, WY, APR. 3 Derek Brown becam e th e fourth different winner this season in th e 250l:c Pro cla ss a t Ch eyenne. Stacey Cook led Bro wn to the first turn of mot o one, but Brow n too k the lead six turns la ter. For the next 10 laps th ey ran a bik e length a part, well ahea d of Dave Newell and Kip Sandell. Newell had gated sixth and Sandell ninth, and by the tim e they had worked to third and fourth , th e Bro wn-Cook duel wasout of reach. On th e last lap , Coo k crashed and Brow n was fina lly able to relax and win com fortab ly ah ead of Cook, who remounted just ahead of Newell and Sandell.
