Young, Andersson trade wins in Texas By Volinda Patrick PAMP A, TX,.AP R. 16-17 The opening two rounds of the National Observed Trials Series got underway at Lake McClellan this weekend with .. two riders claiming number one trophies. Saturday's 26 event was won by defending I Cham pion Ryan Young, ridNational Observed T r ials in g his Italia n-built Beta , while his most respected riva l, Johnny Andersson and his Honda, claimed second overall. Young dropped 22 points to Andersson's 26, giving Young the nod. But Sunday was revenge day for Andersson who came back and scored the victory over Young by an even slimmer margin, 53-56. Lurking behind the .two winners ' was Montesa-mou nted S teve McNeal. McNeal finished third both days, 13 points behind Andersson on Saturday and 22.6 points behind Youn~onSun~y. Ro unding out the top five posruons Sa turday was Fantic rider Mark Manniko and Aprilla-armed Jack Stites, while Kip Webb and Ron Commo, J r. did the honors Sunday. Saturday's event started oui coo l and by mid-day,' temperatures were . nearing 70 degrees, and 17 sections awaited the Championship class; 14 sections were set aside for the rest of the field. Three loops totaling four mi les in length, too k the riders around Lake McCle llan. Most of the sections were extremely technical, consisti ng of rocks , tight turns, plenty of logs and dirt hills. Kenny Leduc was the rider to beat in th e Sportsman class. He dropped just 12 points to Jeff Kingsford's 17. Third went to Kenny Mosteller (23) who was followed LJy D. Black and L. Burnett, both of whom tallied a . score of 26. But Black had more cleans than Burnett, which gave Black the upper hand. In the highly competitive and growing in popularity High School class, Kelly Oldroyd was th e overa ll winner, easily topping the 'class with 19 points dropped, compared to Geoff .Aaro n , who tall ied 28 points. T hird place went to Mike Guns with 44, followed by T odd Cla rk with 57. Fo llowing Sat urday's event the rains came, making Sunday's sections extremely difficult. Sections used Sunday .were similar to those used Sat urday, but m uch slic ker. Andersson was th e rider who shined . through it all, as the riders were struggling through the first section tallyi ng up high scores. . . It was, however, a , tight battle . between Andersson and Young as 'they fough t for traction all day. With each loop, conditions were getting better and better, bu t when it was . all over, Andersson nipped. Young by just three poin ts, 53-56, followed by Steve McNeal (78.6). Webb finished four po ints ahead of Comma, Jr. . Leduc, once again, topped the Sportsman class but.it wasn' t q ui te so easy. Leduc finished two poi nts ahead of Ziggy Jedynak, 54-5 6, followed by Mosteller, J eff Kingsford and S. Gehrle. After taking second pl ace the day before, Aaron came back and took complete command of the High School class, winning by a 36 point margin over Saturday's w in ner Oldroyd, Guns, Tom McNeal an d Todd Clark. • Results SATURDAY .
