MEXICO, APR. 10 T ony Wanket withstood a last lap cha rge by Craig Adams to take the overall wi n at th e Hillto ppe rs Rosarito Beach 100 Grand Prix by th ree seconds. Both rod e H onda 500s in th is Baja California class ic that is part of this Mexi co beach city 's annual Spring Festival. Wanket, a - top mo tocross rid er a decade ago, had virtu all y no experience in thi s Rosarito off-road Grand Prix, and he alm ost lost the race th inking he had fini sh ed! Part of the proceeds 'fro m the race went towards providing polio vaccination shots for th e ch ildren of Ejido Mazatlan, local orphanages, and th e mor e needy ch ildren of Rosarito Beach, acco rd ing to Dave Oak leaf, R ace Coordinator and spokesman for the Hilltoppers. The ra ce started on Rosa rito 's main street to th e delight of th e townspeople and tourists alike. It wound six miles through th e hills before crossing the finish line and pits on th e hillside south of town at th e Lienza Ch arro by La Barca. . From there a 20-m ile circuit was to have been ridden five times, so the winner and all those who completed five laps would actuall y rid e 106 miles. Wanket miscounted, thinking his first time through th e hay ba les signified one lap. At th e end of four complete laps, his fifth time through the finis h, he was given the white flag. He stopped, thin king that that was the checkered flag and that he had won the race. He was in the pits before being to ld he ha d a lap to go and Adams, who's won this race before, was closing ground. At' th e wh ite flag, Wanket was ahead by about a quarter mile. At the finish just a few yards separa ted th e two ri ders. Adams led th e first la p , with Wanket seco nd. J eff H aase was pressing th e leaders throughout th e first lap, but he cras hed hard a nd . ended up with a few stitches in hi s elbo w.
