Davis family win . big at Glen Helen GP By David Procida 36 SAN BER NADI NO, CA, AP R. 2 T he Davis fam ily score d big in the fina l standings to day in CRe's Grand Prix a t Gl en H elen as T erry Davis ra n away with th e Vet class and his son Ty Davis won the 250cc Pro class. - T erry Davi s hol eshot th e entire firs t line of co m bi ned Vet s a nd Seniors and had a 30-second lead coming 'th ro ugh th e scoring chicane on second place Vet Mark Mangold. Whe n th e race came to an end, Davis 'had ope ned up over a mi n u te and a half on second pl ace. In th e Vet Interm ed ia te cl as s .Accessories Un limited rider, Brad Williams took the win with Scott Freeman in second and H o ndamounted Frank Mierau making the top thre e. Ken t Reed put hi s Z-Tech Racing H onda o ut in front of the Vet Novi ce class. Kell y Myers , J r. took second with Bria n Curry rounding o ut th e big three. P hil Davy put hi s O 'N eal KTM ahead of the Vet Beginners, with George Scull y taking th ird behind Bob Zimrnon. T erry Davis was on th e line for th e start of the 250cc Pro race but was led into th e first corner by ZT ech Racing 's Kenny Zahrt•. Pa ul Vlach , and T y Da vis. T y immediately bega n to put di stan ce betwe en him self a nd Zahrt a nd roosted a way. Paul Vlach was now in a dis tant second as Zahn began to dro p off the pace. At the halfway poi nt Ty pu lled over for gas, fresh goggl es, a nd a d rin k of water , and by the tim e he.re-ente red the race hi s lead had dwindled to 30 seconds o n Vlach . On the whi te flag lap, Davis had la pped rid ers all th e way up to third , belonging to his fath er, T erry, and wi th a friendly wave roosted hi s dad as he went by. Pa ul Vlach was the on ly rider not lapped and went ' home wit h second p lace cash. In the Wom an's Expert race Mindy Smith holeshot as T ami Rice tucked her Suzuki right in behind wi th Intermed iate Lori Hedstro m following. L isa Peterson moved up and passed Rice for second, and was soo n pressuring Sm ith for th e lead . Peterson went into the lead on the nex t lap , but when she sta rted to pull a way Peterson got ou t of shape and cras hed. Within three laps Peterson was back into the lead to stay. Smith chased her to the checkered flag wi th Rice falling off the pace. In th e Woman's Novice class, T er r ycab le sponsored Kath y J o Ehrp , piloted a borrowed KX250 to th e chec kered flag ahea d of KT M mounted Valerie Roberts, who in turn stayed ahea d of T eal Nakayama, and rounding out the top four was Susan Green. I During th e 1987 southern Ca lifornia . speedway seaso n, it took English born P hi l Collins until J uly 31 to win a Scra tch main a t the Orange Co unty Fa irgrounds . T hi ngs started out a little faster for the " Briar Flier " in 1988 as he scored a conv incing win in the Scra tch main at the Coors Seaso n O pener on April Fools Day. Co lli ns, rid in g th e Rad ical Racewear/Cirello Racing / J T Racin g/ Norco Mits u bish i/ST P Wesl ak e, ca me from the d readed n umber three starting spot in the main but he edged Alan Christian into turn one. Collins went o ut wide wh ile Christia n g uided h is Weslake to the pole. T hey were even as th ey came off turn two but Collin s got th e drive a nd set tled into first as th ey wen t do wn the back ch u te. Christian tried to po ke his front ti re along th e in side of Collins near the end of th e first circui t but the En glishman man aged to maintain hi s slim lead . At the sa me time Brad Oxley, hoping to co me from th e back, go t by Mike Cu roso for th e third spot. Co llins began to adva nce hi s lead o n the second circuit and from th at p o int o n he was unch all en ged . Oxley cont in ued hi s run and started to pressu re Ch ristian o n th e th ird lap. By th e time' starter J erry Kin g di sp layed th e checkered clo th Collins had a h alf-straig ht lead a n d he bagged hi s first Will of 1988 in front of 6480 fans. Yama ha-mounted Jo h n Brukba uer dropped n ine points to ea rn the runner-u p position. For the open ing round of the 1988 series, the RMEC moved from its usual Rocky Mo un ta in setti ng to th e h igh desert of th e Tonto Na tional Forest, just north of Ph oenix. T here we re 220 e n tr ies for the eve n t, including 140 Col orad o regulars. - Altho ug h ISDE rider Burke did no t ha ve to conte nd wi th his usua l adversary, RMEC Ch ampion Fritz Kadl ec, the slack was taken up by Brukbau er. The du o waged a close ba ttl e thro ugh th e . 98-m ile endur o wi th Brukbau er losing by _ ue of virt two burned chec ks; Burke burned only one. A tight battle for third overall wen t to ISDE veteran Kevin Davis, who edged Dee Tay lor in th e tie-breaker af ter both rid ers dropped 10 points.
