Bro w passed Orr for second o n lap eigh t when Orr got sideways comi ng o u t of turn two. T he order rem a ined Farris. Bro w, Orr, Ingram and Moreh ead unti l la p 13 when Orr do ve under Bro w going into turn three. " I felt I h ad to go ahead ' an d get by' Brow before he ca ught Fa rri s," , Orr sa id. " I gu ess I lost m y co ncentratio n for a moment," Farris sa id. " Whe n he passed me I started trying too hard and that slowed me do wn." Moreh ead had worked his wa y i nto fo u rth o n th e sa me lap a nd with two laps to go Brow pa ssed Farris .wi th Moreh ead in tow. Moreh ead 's ru n n in g with th e leaders was remarka ble because he was fighting a dragging rear brake. The brake had begun to m alfunction ea rly in th e fina l a nd by the end of .the race had become so hot th e di sc wa s badl y discolored. Wi th his first National victory in sight, Orr sa l u ted th e crowd with a wheelie exiting turn four on th e fin al lap. Bro w f i nished seco n d b y a n a rrow m a rg in o ver Moreh ead . Farris a nd Ingra m ro unded o ut the top five. Fast -qualifier Kirk finished l -lth in th e IS-rider field. Kirk ch ose th e wrong gea ring for th e final (it was too low ) a nd ta ngled w it h tw o oth er ride rs comi ng off th e start.
